Special Forces General Fears Change Is Too Slow

America’s ability to win the next Great War will come down to how fast our military can innovate, adapt and change. At the tip of that spear will be US Army Special Operations Command.

LTG John Braga is their Commanding General and joined Fran Racioppi from underneath Utah Beach in Normandy, France, to discuss the state of Army Special Operations yesterday, today and tomorrow.

LTG Braga unpacked the significance of World War II on international norms still in play today, shared his vision for Army Special Operations, his focus on threat-informed decision-making, and how Special Operations has evolved; but more importantly where it needs to go and why it’s not there yet.

He also explains how Special Operations are preparing for conflict with nation-states while also ensuring terrorist organizations have no sanctuary across the globe; including the cyber and space fight deep behind enemy lines.

Check out our conversation from underneath Utah Beach. Head over to our YouTube channel or your favorite podcast platform to catch all our coverage from the 80th Anniversary of D-Day.

Quality Quality of recruits. I work at the Okla METS. Do it quick, the lower standards and the D.E.I. is making us look as cub scouts.

Wow. We are lucky as a country to have people like this directing our armed forces. It is very clear this person could have chosen many paths in life and had career success and financial wealth but he chose a military career. Protect our country. And you listen to his passion. It is unbelievable.
As we roll toward the election, we should all stop and think how important our military, the best in the world, is to our safety and that of the world and when we have the chsnce personally thank anyone we encounter in daily life for their service to our country. God Bless America. God Bless our Military.

Key to special operations success is flexibility and problem solving. Sometimes operators and leaders get caught up in the specifics of WHAT they are doing vs. the pressures and problem solving on the fly that happens in training.

If we really want competence then we need people to sit still for a while. In SF I suppose you do this, but regular Army we’re constantly shifting and losing experience. I could go on for hours.

an American Actor in one of his acting jobs was given the line " a man need to know his limitations " , emotional decisions can produce error, aggression is an expensive resource .

When I was in the 3rd ID, if they had put one more thing on my back I would have been crushed, there was not enough time in any day to complete all the training we had to accomplish. I do not know how anyone is going to do any more training!

In clear words, define who our adversaries are? And then, why are they our adversaries?

Sometimes changing fast isn’t the answer. Changing at a pace while simultaneously being adaptable. Change is good, but not always good to go as fast as an officer wants new OER bullets. You may already have the answer to your problems with what you have. Pay attention.
