Denzel isn't just a legend, he is *The* legend. Brilliant performer. A natural.

Being a parent is literally the easiest job in the world IF you LOVE your children. The love I have for my wife and daughter can't be faked. It's just there. My daughter asked me one time why I always tell her that I'm proud of her before I tell her that I love her. And I told her "Stella, there's nothing on this Earth you can do to ever make me stop loving you. But pride is earned."

When I watched this movie, this is the story I wish his younger son knew about him. I always wondered if anyone told him at any point. It makes so much of Troy make more sense.
This scene is powerful too. Troy closes his eyes when he's telling that story like he's recounting his eyes being swollen shut and blind.

When i was a kid, i saw my neighbour, shouting “yay daddy’s home” when they father's home. I'm confused, curious, can’t understand why they all so excited when their father coming home. Me and my brother used to hide in our bedroom when our father came back from work, because we all scare of him. 1 day, he shouted our name, calling us out. Asking, “why do you guys run away when i came back?”. We were scared to death, so we lied to him saying we got homework to do. The truth is, he’s a hot headed man, when ever he’s stressed out, coming from work, shouting and calling us out, saying he wants to check our homework. We are not brilliant as he always wanted us to be, our grade are just average, barely get an A-. When he found out our grade, he beat the crap out of us, saying we wasting his money, we're worthless, useless. Like every time we got our results, it feels like death to us. No matter what, i will never do this to my kids, i am my father’s son but i am not him. I don’t want my kids hiding in their bedroom when they knew me coming home.

If a man does not confront his fears and insecurities, he will turn into his father instead of becoming an integrated man.

I’m my mom’s son more than I am my fathers. She was a stay at home and was a polar opposite to my dad, pretty much gave me all the good qualities I have in my heart. Now that I’m grown up I listen to my dad much less because I respected him out of fear as a child, I don’t want to be like my dad to my kids, I want them to respect me out of fear of disappointment and not physical consequences. Only time I ever want to get physical with my kids is if they absolutely need it and it’s a final resort. I also want my kids to know I love them without a doubt, I don’t plan on being always soft, but I sure as hell don’t want to be all tough love like my dad’s been to me.

Despite the trouble my kids give me now and again. Despite losing my cool now and then. Despite not being where I want to be in life. I don’t think I’ll ever be unappreciative of the smile on my children’s faces when they open the door for me :)

I used to fight my father when he got drunk. It was a good way to get him away from my mother and sisters and brothers. I am the oldest boy. I'd usually win, I was young, played hockey and highschool football so, the physicality of it wasn't that bad. I really couldn't punch him in the face. So many chances. But I knew my future and that of my mom and siblings would be f*cked if I wailed on him. I remember sitting in an exam in school once...wearing a turtleneck because my throat was bruised. I put down my pen and looked around the gym and wondered how many fellow students had to fight their father ever. Instead of studying for the exam some more...I'm fighting my father...wtf. I always slept with a 2x4 under my bed because on many occasions I woke to him choking me or punching me. My sisters slept with knives. But the really f*cked up part...is that now that I'm older...I look like him. I sometimes catch a glance in the mirror that reminds me of him...and makes me angry. The face I so wanted to pound into the ground. Ahh...such is life I guess...we play the cards we're dealt. I think you become a man when you can take care of yourself, and you don't complain or make any excuses.

Had a friend in school, real nice kid, his mother was single although had a great job and a very respectable woman. This kid hardly was disciplined because him and his mother got along well. Few years down the road she met a ex Marine. Shortly got married, this is when life changed drastically for this kid. His new father only knew how to shout and use a belt. I swear he got a beating daily. Sad part is his other took her new husbands side. She started beating him also. To make a long story short. He finally moved away to another state. Many years later I still think about my friend. I have a better understanding there is a difference between discipline and abuse. Some of us don’t know that difference. Some of use violence to discipline. Does this make you a man? Yes and no, yes if discipline is explained with reason. There is men in prison that will tell you they were beaten as a child. Although never was it explained to them why.
