Microtech Select Fire

Review and impressions of my first and only Microtech. The Select Fire. Pretty awesome knife considering what I got it for. Only real thing I hate... proprietary screws.

I have been told that the tang annomoly is simply due to being necessary to make the dual action version work. Apparently they just used the same exact blade for the dual action and the full manual version.

Yes, it's definitely got the same blad and everything from the automatic. I took this one apart and saw all the inner workings of the blade. There is a lot of room for spring mechanisms and whatnot. Very complicated and a total PITA to put back together. Especially with proprietary screws.

Haha. I understand. Thanks for watching!

Maybe the newer ones are Ti? I thought for sure that the nested liner lock was Ti though. I carbidized it so at least it doesn't ride all the way over now... but man what a pain to strip this knife down. Thanks for watching John.

Very nice review Pat! I have not owned a Microtech before but they definitely look cool. I'm glad you enjoy yours.

No washers either. I stripped the whole thing down. It runs directly on some bushing system and then interfaces directly with the aluminum frame. Similar to the Hogue EX-01

Don't know but my guess would be that the tang construction is a from the automatic version of this knife. With the liner flying across so fast that lip would significantly increase the life of the lock face i think.

Thanks Reno! That review is coming soon! Loving it!

Yeah, when I stripped it down, there is definitely a lot of space for springs and stuff. That lockbar with the springs was a pain to reset in the frame.

I think a grease might work a bit better in there. The grease retains it's lubrication longer and coats all the ball bearings as they roll. I just sink the bearing races in a glob of my Extreme Fluoro and it's great. Just opened up my Silent Soldier flipper and it looks like there was a ton of grease in there. I cleaned it up and put in my EF and it's gliding like new.

The liner is stainless steel if I'm not mistaken Pat. I've always wanted to try an sf out. I will one day. Thanks for the video.

Get one Dan. I'm sure you'll enjoy it a lot. I think in particular if I know your tastes, you'd like the Delta.

Ah, so that is why bladeplay develops on the SF. Hopefully mine will be okay. And definitely no ball bearings...at least not in the pivot. You can see the washers. But it is smooth.

Unless the new ones are different, the SF definitely doesn't have bearings. I took the whole thing down so the steel is rubbing directly against the aluminum. It does have some sort of bushing in there that is probably for the auto system.

The bladeplay definitely pisses me off. :(

It's a pretty sweet knife. I like the form factor of it. Still eyeing the Delta though. Especially with the cts-204p

Haha! I guess depending on the church, if you typically tuck in your shirt that thing will hang out like an eyesore! Mine's pretty casual so I guess I could go either way. Definitely like a smaller EDC on Sundays. SNG CC works well :)

Pat I just missed that VECP that went up in the cove... When it comes in feel free to rub in the sweet deal you got lol. Can't wait to see the review!

Haha. yeah... I couldn't pass it up. I was actually dying to get this one because I still have my other VECP that is brand new. Haven't been able to carry it! Now I can carry this one with no guilt.
