00:00 Puffer Jacket Introduction

Recent years within the world of menswear have seen an uprising in the use of puffer jackets and coats or as they’re also known, “down jackets”.

While wearing a coat when it’s cold certainly isn’t a new idea, what we’ve noticed is a growing amount of people choosing to wear puffer jackets pretty much whenever they feel like it, not only are they seen as an extension of streetwear, but we’re even beginning to see an adoption of the puffer jacket over tailored garments and other elements of classic menswear.

00:52 What is a Puffer Jacket?

In simple terms, a down or puffer jacket consists of a simple coat constructed from waterproof fabric and filled with either goose or duck feathers.

02:23 Puffer Jacket History

The creation of the puffer jacket is widely credited to George Finch. An Australian chemist and mountain climber who, in 1922, crafted a coat out of balloon cloth and eiderdown feathers. Fourteen years later, in 1936, another version of the puffer jacket was created by Eddie Bauer. The following year, a similar jacket with a down-dilled design was created by haute couture designer Charles James.

Puffer jackets continued to enjoy popularity throughout the following decades.

04:39 Can I Wear a Puffer Jacket if I Love Classic Style?

After all, the type of classic style we all love has more to do with looking elegant, refined, and sophisticated. It’s rare to see anything chunky or obviously practical in the realms of classic style.

06:16 Wearing a Puffer Jacket Classically

Think of things like a well-cut pair of denim jeans, where two items of clothing born out of practical needs complement each other well. And there are also sweaters and other knitwear items that you can consider pairing with a puffer jacket.

Should denim be too casual for your tastes, then why not try another classic winter wardrobe staple; corduroy trousers. A pair of these sturdy pants will see you through the colder months very well, and the subtle ribbing would complement the lines present on a puffer jacket.

10:28 So, Timeless or Trend?

What is prevalent in the world of puffer jackets is their ability to be used as a way of being, well, trendy. Therefore, we’re going to have to rule that puffer jackets are a trend if you’re a lover of classic style.

I’m curious, given what we’ve explored about puffer jackets today, where do you stand on the topic? Do you agree with our assessment that they’re a trend? e you on the side of timeless?

I think they're classic and appropriate for their intended use which is casual, active wear in cold weather.

But not as a replacement for formal wear.

Great piece of kit. Not a fad, and essential for cold Canadian winters. Remember my father and his friends wearing these on the ski hill in the early 70’s.

I've worn puffer jackets in years past but decided on a Filson wool and tin cloth hooded jacket this year. Stylish and functional in a rustic sort of way.

I love getting style advice on casual clothes from people who don’t wear casual clothes

They're functional - good ones really do work well. I think keep them for activewear/practicalwear. However, opt for something else in more formal situations.

Those vintage parkas and puffers worn by mountaineers of old are very cool and stylish.

I love that we have finally come to a consensus on Raphael's Duffle Coat, and I couldn't agree more! The Duffle Coat reminds me of another garment that French colonists brought to Canada, called the Capote. It was made from a wool blanket, it had a hood, closed with a belt, and covered down to past the knee. In Western Canada, the settlers began making Capotes from blankets that had designs traditional to the native peoples. This was done to embrace the natives' culture, in an effort differentiate themselves from the United States and Great Britain, who did not appear to have any intention of doing the same. In Boy Scouts, there are some chapters of an honor society that uses the Capote for camping and ceremonies! I still have my Capote, and I usually wear it with a Smart-Casual ensemble but when I go to the mountain, I definitely wear it skiing!

My take on puffer jackets is that they are juvenile and unflattering, I am a Husky fellow and I look like as you compaired it to the Stay Puffed Marshmallow man. I tried having one when I was younger but I ended up looking like a basketball with legs. If I want a shorter jacket I will stick to my Barbour.

Most puffer jackets I’ve had have actually not been waterproof. If you buy a puffer from a fashion brand, usually it won’t be. It’s the more technical brands that offer waterproof versions, and those usually are comparable in price with a nice overcoat. Personally, I do have a puffer jacket which I use more for utility than for looking stylish.

You wouldn't take a smoking jacket to Mt Everest and you wouldn't wear a puffer to dinner...
But there's nothing wrong with any of these, providing you have some tact and common sense.

Timeless or trend, they are handy to have. I would rather have one for outdoor activities than with suit and tie.

Yes because we wear it so often. Just like men thought motorcycle jackets were a fad, and they ended up being a timeless style.

Really good, they’re easy to throw over a shirt or hoodie, whenever it’s really cold I just keep mine on even when I enter buildings as I really don’t have the time to take it off.

I would agree its more essential for cold weather especially when out in the country or mountains! My Superdry Everest Jacket Hoodie is incredibly to keep me warm in the coldest of weathers! It has so far kept me warm and dry will find out if its as Superdry as they mention when it starts raining heavily at the end of autumn! Puffer jackets were never look as good as a classic Long Coat or Trench Coat, thats a given! I do recommend Superdry for Puffer jackets they are cut so well that I have a number of their jackets over the years.
P.S Love the horrible puns such a British thing to do to get a reaction! Well done Gents.

There is no other coat out there of any material that can do whatever those down coats and jackets can.
They are able to keep you warm and light at the same time.
You can also find some pieces made of woolen outer shell that can level up your outfit to more formal. So, those jackets, as long as they don’t have crazy patterns or bold colors, they are definitely business appropriate.
Italians wear them over suits all the time, and if we’re talking about menswear, the Italians know better

I am able to pair my quilted Barbour jacket with my classic clothes. But I agree with you that puffer jackets are for more casual looks.

The alternative is to go with Norwegian Wool which is more classic on the outside but slim-fitting puffer coat on the inside. Prices are up in the stratosphere.

Tbh I’m a fan of the more minimalistic and less garish ones. They’re clean and simple and if they’re high quality can be very elegant
