Welcome to the sixteenth episode of The Sci Guys. In this episode we will be investigating Newton's third law of motion and what chemical fuels are by making matchstick missiles also known as matchstick rockets. We will show you how you can explore this topic at home with a bunch of simple household items.

Box of Matches
Aluminium Foil
2 x Paper Clips
BBQ Lighter
Goggles
Gloves
Lab Coat or Apron

I like your method for creating the exhaust shaft, have you tried up-sizing the experiment with multiple matches or anything?

We did try to make them with multiple match sticks at one point during filming. We found it a challenge to get consistent results using multiple sticks. Finding the balance between using enough foil to keep the gases and heat contained and not using too much that it weighed down the rocket and it didn't fly, was a difficult. We will probably be revisiting these missiles later on if we get it to work consistently.

I tried this with my Physical Science class; we just could not get it to work.  I think it has to do with how you wrap the match stick.  This is great though, I will show the girls the video and let them see how it should go.
