Welcome to the thirteenth episode of season 2 of The Sci Guys. In this episode we will be mixing hydrogen peroxide and yeast, to produce a hot foam known as elephant toothpaste. We will show you how a catalyst can accelerate the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to make elephant toothpaste. At the end of this video you will be able to demonstrate with an experiment how to make elephant toothpaste and how adding a catalyst to a chemical reaction can accelerate the reaction.

Equipment and Ingredients:
Hydrogen Peroxide (3%, 6% or 12% Concentration)
Dry Yeast
Dish Soap
Food Colouring
Mixing Bowl
Measuring Cups and Spoons
Cake Tin
Beaker, Glass or 2L Pop Bottle
Goggles
Gloves
Apron or Lab Coat

For your elephant toothpaste experiment to work fully, I have figured out that your warm water and dry yeast mixture has to be the same thickness/consistency as over the counter cough syrup.

i tried to dilute the 50% hydrogen peroxide with water but it still didn't work i don't now what I'm doing wrong. but how much water should use with the hydrogen peroxide 50%.should it be like 50/50 or something else ?

ok i just tried it. this time it gives a bit of foam but only like 2 cm above the mixture .was it because i didn't use enough soap or to much yeast or is it because of the mixture?
