Canonical has recently released Ubuntu 20.10, which follows Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. With only 9 months of support, is it worth upgrading from an LTS release? In this video, we'll take a look at the latest version of this popular Linux distribution and see whether or not you should consider upgrading.

You may want to update the thumbnail. It says Ubuntu 20.04 instead of 20.10

Some very interesting points here. Thanks for the review! I actually only just upped from 18.04 to 20.04 so I'll probably stick with the LTS again for now

Thanks for discussing that backporting of kernel and some other stuff to LTS will happen eventually. This has made my decision to install LTS much easier. Also, I believe the dev tools containerization point is true.

I'm still on 18.04. It's perfectly cool for my daily routine. Thanks for the review.

I have been using the Awesome window manager with 20.04 for some time now, and like how it works. I hardly ever use any of their packaged, desktop environments. That said, judging from the amount of people who use Ubuntu, Canonical must be doing something right. It is amazing, and you don not have to be a Celt, Saxon, or Norman to enjoy it. Thank you for not bad mouthing Canonical. Ubuntu's current release looks good, I am sure it is stable and easy to use. I am just too lazy to install it on bare metal, and prefer their long term release schedule.

Nice shirt! Obviously Nerds always listen to cool music. IDK

I still run Xubuntu on my cheap laptop I bought years ago (I kicked Win10), and it's still going strong.

Thanks for the video. I appreciate the honest review

Ubuntu 20.10 natively recognized my Sunix serial card. 20.04 does not, and getting the driver installed with secure boot was amazingly tedious and painful. 20.10 is worth it to me just for this.

FYI, appreciated the review...came across it AFTER I upgraded. After a week or so though I am realizing it was a good choice.
1) I connect to a windows machine via Remmina...it's now much faster, and feels nice using the windows machine.
2) When I move files around between Ubuntu and Windows drives, loading a windows drive and accessing content much much faster and smooth.
3) My ubuntu upgrade longer crashes--I know previous version crashes could be from my personal setup but still, doesn't happen anymore.
4) Just using Ubuntu on its own feels faster. Maybe I am imagining things but for example, LibraOffice seems faster and smoother.
5) A few other nice things but can't remember...
Overall, I think everything you said makes sense but as Linux PaulM said below, the upgrade seems rock solid and definitely a better experience overall with my machine.
Cheers

Always appreciate your reviews. I upgraded to PopOS 20.10 as soon as it was released and love it. It would be interesting to see whether you have the same gaming issues on it although gaming doesn't really matter to me personally since the only game I play is gnome mines, and that one always seems to have plenty of fps.

Well Ubuntu 20.10 improves my wifi experience greatly and really responsive on overall app experiences I had as well. Further more it stabilises Nvidia graphic issues which had been persisted even in my Ubuntu 20.04 .

Loaded 2010 on a Raspberry Pi 4 4G. Very happy with the Imager program to install the software. Runs well at this point as I am still installing software. I also update software in principal to get all the software developments which may not be obvious to the user . I also run Mint 20 Cinnamon on my desktop. I have tried a few distributions and keep coming back to Mint. Thanks for your work on the channel.
ps When install linux I use lowercase "ian morris". The user ID will default to ian

I was happy with 18.04 LTS, but upgraded to 20.04 on one laptop. Snap/snapd broke a lot of things I use daily, so I removed everything snap and installed a non-snap version of the erstwhile snap-apps. Since then remote printer support has deteriorated (from daily application system updates?) to the point that some "discovered" remote printers won't print from the 20.04 system because of some disagreement between between the 20.04 cups-browsed and the 18.04 cups-browsed on the host where the HPLJ is connected via USB results in a 20.04 printer error claiming there is no host for the discovered "implicitclass:" printer (which continues print OK from other (18.04) hosts. If there's another major breakage in 20.04, I will be forced to back off to 18.04. I can't be spending this much time chasing release-related problems ... I've got big enough sysAdmin backlog as it it!

Good video thanks man, by the way i have a question : Can you backports software from ubuntu 20.10 to ubuntu 20.04. For example bashtop can be installed from repository 20.10 but does not exist in 20.04

I upgraded to 20.10 because of Gnome and Yaru theme enhancements. I removed the sssd.service after the upgrade because it failed out of the box and I dont need it. Other than that it was a flawless upgrade. Of course you need to check your PPAs and third party apps afterwards.
