This is so true. Personally, I find recording my audio separately (currently via a handheld audio recorder, often on a tripod) tends to help a lot - especially as I don't have cameras with an audio input. And I find it makes quite a difference to my videos, even when the visual quality was still average.

Conversely, I've seen some company's professional official videos where the video quality and camerawork are excellent, but they use poor in-camera audio and it really lets the overall production down.

One tip I personally started with was that I had already been trying to do a podcast for a while before branching out into video. As I'd record in my living room, I used to just set my mic up by my chair and record my audio directly into the computer whilst I talked to the camera.
If you already have a podcasting or audio recording setup, and don't mind dealing with trailing cables, it can be another way of getting decent quality audio recorded if you don't need to go out and about.

Any tips when it comes to the external mic setup? ACG on or off?
I have a video mic pro and behind the mic is still picked up but the issue is it peaks a hell of a lot from behind but sounds perfect from the front.
Any ideas?

A little off-budget, but a Mikme could work well if you're really looking for that high, studio-quality audio or audio samples.
