One underrated aspect of this movie i rarely ever see appreciation for is the magnificent sound design. The sound effects in this movie sound absolutely phenomenal and help make this movie incredibly immersive.

As unrealistic as this scene is, it’s still a masterful display of imagination. In real life, a 179% downhill grade would cause the engines to explode due to the train’s weight and altitude angle. But the sound design as well as Tom Hanks’ scream really drives home the excitement in this scene.

I’ve learned 2 things from this

1: Glacier Gulch is way more dangerous compared to anything that happens on Sodor

2: never let six flags design your railroad

For those that don’t know, the first sign on the left says “danger 179% grade” which means the track is going up and down 179ft over 100 feet making this track more than mountain grade which at minimum is only 3%

The fact that the locomotive and tender weighs nearly 270 tons, I'm suprised that the ice didn't completely shatter when the loco rocked... but it's a "magic train"

"Considering the fact, that we have lost communication with the engineer, we're standing totally exposed in front of the locomotive, the train appears to be accelerating uncontrollably, and we are rapidly approaching Glacier Gulch, which just happens to be the steepest down-hill grade in the world, I suggest we all hold on... TIGHTLY!"

Incredible when a 2-8-4 Lima Built Berkshire Locomotive dosn't break the ice but a tiny pin does... "Magic Train."

All I'm hearing is nothing but Woody screaming at the top of his lungs when dropping down that slope and onto the roller coaster track.

As a kid, this scene always got my blood pumping and my heart racing cause my child self was like "BuT wHaT iF tHeY fAlL oFf AnD dIe???" and i hated it so much. As a now adult, I would 100%, not even thinking about it, ride a polar express themed roller coaster ANY day.

They really need to make a roller coaster like this

I saw the polar express in 2004 with my kindergarten class. I swear we went to the IMAX Theatre to watch it, cause this scene was so insane to watch on the massive screen!

I think in this scene alone the Polar Express just broke the land speed record!

I’m so surprised that they didn’t make a roller coaster out of this!
