When I saw this movie in theaters back in 2004, I remember all the kids laughing so hard. Myself included.

Today, while working in my lab, I learned what cotter pin is. That piece of metal that fell is called a cotter pin.

The train could have not gone to Glacier Glutch if Steamer had stopped the train via the brake and checking for damage to then find the problem and continue on to the north pole

The movie never addressed why the throttle was jammed, in the first place.

for the people who keep asking about why he didn't just use the brake.
1st: humans panic
2nd: it would've been useless anyway. You can't stop a train if power is still being applied too it. When the throttle ripped off, it was still open. Which allows steam to continue into the steamchest, which continues to move the cylinders, thus continuing to move the drivers. If you apply the brake I'm willing to bet the locomotive would be constantly overpowering the brakes (because shocker. When you apply the brake it doesn't just force slam the drivers to stop spinning. The brakes just apply pressure to the driver tire slowing it down.). So not only would you be ruining the brake shoes, you'd also be destroying the drivers as well as there's now a giant piece of metal being pushed up against all the drivers.
