Friday Freakout: Sketchy Parachute Opening, Skydiving Student Forgets Training

___

A freefall-qualified military jumper was transitioning to civilian skydiving through the MFF Transition Program. Having prior training on ripcord-equipped gear, the student forgot his new training (throw and let go of the pilot chute) and reverted to his old training instead (hold on to the ripcord through the deployment process). The outcome was a cutaway and reserve deployment while still holding the ripc-, err, pilot chute in his hand.

When it comes to transitioning to new systems and gear, practicing pilot chute pulls on the ground is critical for a successful and safe transition.

Legend has it... he’s still hasn’t let go of the pilot chute.

Nothing like creating a malfunction where there isn’t one.

Love how he tosses the cutaway handle straight away while still holding the pilot chute.

I know you can become attached to your gear but sometimes you just have to let go

Now I’ve seen everything, this occurrence never even entered my mind.

The guy actually did a really good jump, he just needs to work on letting go of his pilot chute.

Bro! 😳 Whatching that reserve pilot chute dance in the burble with the bridle of the main in slow motion sent chills up my spine!

That’s like when Homer Simpson got his hand stuck in the vending machine, all he had to do was let go of the candy bar.

Rose: *Don't let go Jack*

Jack: *I'll never let go....even when I cutaway*

This is a literal guy, and I’m sure they didn’t specifically explain that after he deploys he needs to release the pilot chute.

He was just 100% following the instructions as he had understood them to the letter.

It’s just a reminder that what seems obvious to us might not be obvious to everyone.

Dude did his cutaway and reserve while still holding onto his pilot chute. This is next level lol

You would think someone that’s on coach jumps and can track, dock, roll and turn would know that he has to let go of his pilot chute for it to work.

When i went through AFF 10 years ago the guy that taught me told me "throw it like it is that rattle snake you saw while walking up in here"
After i had a dozen or jumps i asked him why he always made a big deal about throwing it. I guess this is why, people freeze up and hold onto it hahah

Wow, his aerial form seemed very controlled for a student who couldn't remember to let go of his pilot chute. The description below the video made sense of that discrepancy.
