Friday Freakout: High-Speed Premature Parachute Opening

A premature opening is never a good thing, especially at high-speeds when you're sit flying with a group of friends. Luckily no other skydivers were directly above him when his main canopy deployed!

It's hard to say exactly what caused this premie, but this should serve as yet another reminder to use freefly-friendfly gear, such as a freefly-pud on your pilot chute and a bungee cord connected to your legs straps to ensure you don't fall out of your harness, as well as a tight BOC on your container.

Ouch ! That back of his is going to need a lot of Chiropractic ! Freeflying without a Freefly friendly rig is this dangerous. He probably lost consciousness but this could have been much worse ! Hope he's OK !

as someone who jumped a long time ago, using a static line, with a modified T10.... can someone please explain what exactly is so bad about the opening?...thanks

His pilot chute gave the, “f you, f you, you’re cool, and f you, I’m out!” speech from Half Baked.

He'd have been black and blue after that. You can break bones with a premature in a head up or head down attitude. If those lines got entangled with his neck or arms, it would have been a blood bath.

So what was the problem? Did he not use freefly friendly gear? And if so why then still jump... this can also become a problem not just for the fool who decides to still freefly but also for others.. imagine he was directly under the other skydiver.

Let's see ... 160 MPH to 5 mph in less than a second = probably 10+ Gs and spinal injuries. Always make sure ALL you handles are secured!
