CEO just told us yesterday that layoffs were coming in July. I’ve been so burned out, that I’m thinking this might be a blessing in disguise.

I try to live as follows:
* Always assume that a job can end tomorrow, but also keep a positive attitude - job changes are to be expected these days.
* Forget saving 6 months - aim to save enough to live for 2 years. Burning through your savings at a rate close to 20% a month can make every day of the layoff stressful. If the rate is closer to 5% then you can actually have fun using the spare time.
* Avoid debt whenever possible; buy things when you have the cash - and preferably when your savings balances exceeds your target.
* Track your spending in a spreadsheet, at least for several months. It is important to understand how much is spent on what.
* When you can work - work.
* Learn to do the work that you ordinarily hire people to do for you: home repairs, simple vehicle maintenance, filling out tax forms, etc.
* Keep an awareness of possible upcoming expenses and assume that they will hit during a layoff.
Riding out a layoff in comfortable financial shape is much more enjoyable than driving a fancy car or using a $1, 000 phone.

Folks, jobs these days are not stable like they used to be.

I highly encourage you to cut up credit cards, pay off all debt as fast as possible. Get out of vehicle payments and get that mortgage paid off asap.

Live your life without payments. I promise, when, not if you experience a job loss. It still hurts, but it's so much easier.

Everyone is so caught up in having stuff and financing everything under the sun

I got laid off twice in 2009, with zero notice and zero package, and as a single parent. I pride myself on these 3 things. It made my skin thicker and prepared me for the game in the future. I’ve had many coworkers who only now experienced a layoff, and the shock/grief that comes with it.

I just got laid off today. The home improvement industry is bleeding heavily. I didn't have a good feeling after company wide sales were down big in Q1 of 2023. It's really hard to describe the feeling of being laid off, a sense of helplessness. My wife has a great paying job, however she is due with our first child on June 12th of this year. She also will have 6 weeks of unpaid maternity leave coming up. I'm very nervous, but confident I'll be able to find a new job soon

When I got laid off the first thing I did was go to the Labor Board and collect unemployment. They sometimes help you find new work and its the wise thing to do. When I was 63 I got laid off and I collected a small unemployment for 11 months. Then I hung it up. I lived on saved up money and after the unemployment was exhaused then I collected social security. Then my parents pased away and inherited the house and I have a small pension and social security and I collect $600.00 for life.

This guy is clearly leading by example with the course. Smart thing to do! I'll never come back to being an employee ever again, but somehow I'm watching this anyway.

I was laid off a few days ago. This is the most unpleasant feeling. They told me that the reason of this laid off is that the company is struggles financially due to downturning the business. So right now I'm trying to figure out what next. And these kinds of videos are helping to focus and do the right thing! Thank you guys.
I've started to film my experience too and created my Youtube channel where I show what am I doing in order to find the job. Your suggestions are absolutely helpful!

A traditional layoff when a callback is expected can be an awesome opportunity to do a seasonal job that you always dreamed of. Perhaps you always wanted to work in the Alaskan fishing industry, at a ski area or at a National Park. A lot of those jobs provide food and housing.

Any job you work just figure it's a matter of time. Companies don't give two shats about you. Any time the management tells you not to worry you know a massive lay off is coming. This guy must be a hoot at a party.

# 1 should be: immediately file for unemployment online that same day if possible.

#2: Yes, budget and cut stuff out ASAP.

#3: stay focused and busy. Read the Bible such as the word of the day and trust God. Also, start your mornings by going to the gym if you can. Get that health up and better so you don’t go nuts. Staying healthy or fit so you don’t go sane. Diet and exercise and hydration and prayer and sleep.

#4: I would not apply to everything except f it’s not a dream job or desirable job. I think it’s called “spray and something…..”

#5: keep growing and learning no matter how small.

Most importantly, Do NOT let this break you down or define you. It happened to you, it’s not who you are. Get better, get therapy as soon as you can afford it. Heal you first!

Be glad you were laid off and can collect unemployment because those who weren’t laid off are now doing your job as well as their own and are being treated horribly.

A key thing to do BEFORE being laid off is to investigate your current job market for potential job opportunities in your field. If you live in a job desert, it's probably time to look at geographic areas with many opportunities in your field. Move to those areas if at all possible. That way, if one job ends, other local opportunities are available to you.

If you are employed, save as much money as possible. Unemployment is not always easy to get and sometimes is not given for very long.

Good advice indeed. I would go so far as to say its worth doing these things as a matter or course nowadays because of how uncertain has become.

Getting laid off is scary. Happened to me 2x in the last 10 years, b/c both jobs/companies decided to sell. Mostly everyone was gone. I was lucky those 2 times since they both offered decent packages and gave me a fair amount of notice. It also took me 2 - 3 months to find new employment. Still, it set back my career since the first time was around '09 when everything hit the fan & in the IT field salaries have never gone back to what they were. Also I'm not getting any younger, lol

Part of why I got back into driving a truck is lay-offs. Throughout COVID I've made more money. There's a steep shortage in drivers who are reliable, safe, and experienced. If I was some how laid off today, I can get a job with a phone call and be onboarding within about a week or two.

It also allows me to relocate wherever I want and still have employment. There are tons of opportunities out there for people like me. I also really enjoy the work, so it's a great place for me to go.

If you're in the right line of business and location, and work diligently enough, you can also make a 6-figure income at it. 😁👍

I always recommend diversifying to keep yourself employable. Keep up a huge pile of useful skills, so you can bounce to another option in a pinch. Time flies when the money is running out.

The company told us they were fazing out our department and we were getting laid off. They announced it 4 months before the actual lay off. This happened in the middle of the recession. Talk about low moral those 4 month. Everyone did the bare minimum. The place felt like a cemetery. People at other departments avoided us. It was the weirdest experience I had at a job. The company was nice enough to try and get us jobs in other departments.

First time I got laid off, I was unemployed for about 8 months and I was searching for jobs non stop. I finally got a job but only to be laid off again about 2 months later, and I was unemployed for almost a full year. I been working in Customer Service for a bit of time.
