I have played with various variants of UNIX. To a user, they are very much the same apart from slight commands differences as in options on Linux, BSD and System V UNIX.

Anyone who used Linux can use UNIX.

I kinda get the feeling that this guy doesn't wanna run linux...

Not being a unix user, but a GNU/Linux user, I think it is really cool that you use unix and strongly believe in it. From your video I can hear you clearly, and I think I sound much the same when talking to people about using GNU/Linux over M$. Many years ago I did dabble with FreeBSD and found is very interesting, but chose to go the path of GNU/Linux. Your information is excellent and I would be very interested in hear more about your knowledge and experience, but, and I do not know how much flax you have received, I do have concerns that you are going to have a stroke. In the video I can see your face get very red, however, you may have just cause for such aggression. The intensity is real, but I am going to subscribe for a while anyway because, I believe, you have a lot of information to share. Thank-you for sharing your expertise and I do look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Nobody says you have to run a GUI on a server. Nobody would claim there is an advantage. You're ranting about a non-existent issue.

BSD Vs Linux - They're both great *nix options, both have distributions for different architectures, and are both generally run headless in server environments. Linux does have a slightly larger user base, and that CAN mean differences in availability or active development level of various packages, but not necessarily. In the end, use what you like and works for you, and let everyone else do the same. I don't understand why there should be any animosity in either direction.

But if you can use Unix why can't you use Linux?

It is fantastic that you have a diverse set of hardware & operating systems installed and can share your experiences, as well as illustrating differences between them. If someone's experience is limited to say only one or a few, and in particular not much at the command line... then it tends to be pretty narrow perspective... i.e. the opposite of what you are sharing. Knowing which tool / os / app to use is a skill indeed. Good points about home vs business environments.

I love Solaris, still tinker with it from time to time... I'm just sad that back in 2003, they were going to release the Glass OS (project looking glass), but never shipped... It was beautiful, easy to use and they were planning on the double click standard (package installation for the not so terminal savvy folks). Basically bringing Solaris (Unix) to the home PC scene. Media, Work, Gaming etc.. I really don't know what went wrong. This coming from a non-developer, wanting to use Unix for its stability for the home scene.

A very high percentage of Linux users are ex-Windows users that are think they have graduated to ultra k-rad 1337ness by running a desktop Linux distro but still don't know there are more computers and systems out there outside of Wintel and maybe a Rasberry Pi. I know how frustrating it can be dealing with that crowd.

In your example at 11:23 you appear to be running OpenMandrivaLX in VMware Workstation on Windows 10.
I'm rather astonished you'd do that. If you can use Unix, why the hell would you run Windows?
In answer to your GUI on server question: No serious Unix or Linux user runs a server with a GUI.

I think most of these people really missed the boat. Should I tell em? The Sun Microsystems V490 "Sebring" went end of life April 2009. The Sun Microsystems E4900 "Amazon 4" went end of life January 8th, 2009. The series of servers they are apart of were introduced to the world in 2001. They both have SPARC processors in them, so you'll need a operating system that will run on SPARC processors, and not all will. Linux came about because users wanted a low cost UNIX because normally UNIX is pretty expensive. Linus Benedict Torvalds is a Finnish-American software engineer who is the creator, and for a long time, principal developer of the Linux kernel, which became the kernel for operating systems such as the Linux operating systems, Android, and Chrome OS. "Most" commands used in the command line interface (CLI) structure in LINUX are similar, if not exactly the same and the same syntax is used. Having a Frame Buffer/Video Card in your server really has no use, other than ease of maintenance. for each machine. You don't really need a GUI on a server system, they weren't meant to be seen. You remote console to each server you want to maintain from a main PC or a PDC which would have a console or terminal to view the output. You'll have hundreds of servers on a rack doing individual tasks, or you'll need hundreds of screens, keyboards, etc. Shall I go on...

You know what? Stop asking questions, and do what you want, and let people do what they want. You're so weird with your upset attitude.

You are absolutely correct. There is no advantage using Linux over UNIX on your Sparc's. In terms of networking its best not to use a GUI or have additional services running which may be vulnerable to exploits. GUIs are only for convenience and IMO the GUI has become so popular because most people are lazy and don't or wont want to remember command syntax's. Indeed, the command structure of Linux is transparent with UNIX however stay with the OS which is natively written for that architecture.

Although I do have GUIs installed on a majority of my servers but when i connect to the 99% of the time I connect through SSH. Also, when I introduce or build servers for my clients initially during the pre-development stages of the projects I will always inform clients on how robust a server performs with no GUI installed especially now days where we have VPSs you don't get a GUI anyway. CLI is pure power.

GOTO 2013 • Power Use of UNIX • Dan North

Lastly, as I stumbled across the video at random it was very inspiring because since the mid 90s when I acquired my first 2 Sun's (SparcStationLX & SparcClassic) workstations, I am now inspired to bring them back into service. Both are in immaculate condition. I think the only challenge I am faced with is to find an VGA adapter to connect them to a modern day monitor rather than the big clunky 17" that came with them and the keyboard undoubtedly needs cleaning as it has sat in the garage for many years.

Any assistance in the resurrection process would be greatly appreciated.

Because I don't want to. I enjoy Linux. If you like Unix then stay there.

I believe it's mostly a fact of compatibility. Modern hardware tend to have closed source driver and tend not to care about "not mainstream" architectures. In order to use most of BSD OSes you need very specific hardware but in your case everything makes sense and you are right about using FreeBSD, I would do the same. I have been using both, my laptop bought in 2001 still have FreeBSD and works like a charm, a lot of people would use BSD instead of Linux but honestly... it is not possible anymore, at least not without a long swearing session.
Few people would spend days in finding workarounds or specific configurations for making FreeBSD work properly. My specific case was no driver for WIFI, battery lasts less than 1 hr, GPU constantly at the maximum throttle on pure terminal (no Xorg... frame buffers). Linux simply worked :). So the question was why bother if you need bash and few development tools that are available in both?
