“For most of the normies out there, an operating system is just a bootloader for Google Chrome.”

>using Linux in front of class mates
>teacher says "Ok students, now open photoshop"
>start furiously typing away at terminal to install wine
>Errors out the ass
>Everyone else has already started their classwork
>I start to sweat
>Install GIMP
>"Umm...what the fuck is THAT anon?" a girl next to me asks
>I tell her it's GIMP and can do everything that photoshop does and IT'S FREE!
>"Ok class, now to draw use the shape tool to draw a circle!" the teacher says
>I fucking break down and cry and run out of class
>I get beat up in the parking lot after school
Free and open source!

The Linux community seems to want people changing from Windows to Linux, while at the same time doing everything to scare off newcomers.

Normies don't use PCs anymore. They use phones and tablets. The only ones who use PCs now are the ones that need PCs.

TempleOS is better than both Windows and Linux.

honestly the most important feature of linux seems to just be the ability to tell others you use linux.

As "above basic" Linux user, I can tell you that the very first question "hey, what Linux should I install or get" is quite representative for the upcoming challenges

Windows is expensive if you don't value your time.
MacOS is ... expensive.

There is critical mistake, 99% of people never install a OS at all, the "normies" buy a laptop that comes pre-installed with windows. People who install an OS are either software developers or gamers that build a custom rig. Because the second group is a lot larger(and there is a lot of overlap) the people who do install an OS themselves choose the one that can run the games they want to play.

When windows 10 used to be awful, I installed Ubuntu on dad's PC and even though he's 60yr old, he got used to it in about a week.

This entire comment section has made me realize something. Linux doesn't need an "easier distro", it needs a settings application. So many of the problems people have with linux, are issues because of accessibility. Because no one wants to look at a command line. If that's the case, then give it to them. Give them a selection of options they can choose from to flick things on or off, 1 or 2 or 3 or 4, and see how many people move over. Mint was a good start, proton has been a strong contender for the best thing to happen to linux in recent history, but if someone made a settings application that unapologetically stole ideas from windows, linux would actually explode.

Its not the installation time that's the problem, but babysitting Linux because something inevitably breaks on its own forcing you to fuck around with forums and the terminal. Why can't it just work reliably as a daily driver? Its like a car that craps itself and has to be rewired and have every filter cleaned and some weird new problem is found in the drivetrain every 50 miles.

You are not an ex-Google ex-Facebook millionaire so your arguments is invalid. It would have a little more credibility if your video is exactly 10:01 long, but it isn't, so it's complete trash.

Ive been using linux on daily basis for at least 4 years now? Ive started with ubuntu, went through debian and ended up with manjaro.
And honestly? I couldn't agree less with you, linux can be incredible time sink just to get something running. Im living in comfort of using both linux and windows (and suprise - I hate both of them for different reasons.. I miss win7 badly lol) for different purposes.

More annoying is that sometimes stuff just gets broken for this or that reason. My linux is my work rig, so it literally costs me money when it does that. BTRFS snapshots to the rescue, yes, but last time it failed, dunno why. Recovery took me "just" 5 hours. In contrast, on my windows machine, even if entire OS gets unbootable, even if my main ssd gets completely overwritten with /dev/zero, I have recovery plan that stands it up in circa around 1 hour, from which only first 2 minutes require my intervention.

For 5 years Ive been using linux on and off, mostly as a dualboot because I have never once said "Good thing I have linux". It brought me only pain and suffering. I tried mint - xubuntu - ubuntu, and always there is some absurd idiotic situation I need to spend at least a day to solve just to run it normally. Yesterday I wanted to add my dedicated GPU to the system, which was completely ignored, so I dl'ed drivers, guix, everything by the tutorial for my version, etc. And it broke and couldnt boot up.
I can't believe I'll ever start to like linux like this. Feels like getting a bullet to my head when I need to solve 101 subproblems just to run/write/debug some code

Me - *wants to use linux *

All of my engineering and design tools - "no."

I have this theory that every Linux user has at some point made a deal with the devil that granted them the ability to use Linux but cost them the ability to even approximate the computer-related-knowledge of the average person

You know the deal when it comes to linux: when it works, it works but when something breaks? Good luck!

I come back to Linux every few years hoping there's finally a user friendly, stable distro and it is literally worse every time.
I loved tinkering with Linux in my 20s, but now I just want an operating system that works.

I've always disliked Linux's contempt for 'normies'. Like computers are only for them to show how smart they are. A firefighter should not need to know how to compile an application from your code repository to get information about the next fire. We made computers to help people with their tasks, not to make them learn about our hobby. The harder it is for the average user to complete their task, the worse the OS.
