there's never been a better time to play games on Linux than now, thank you Valve, Lutris, Heroic and the Linux community.

Please make a part-2 for more advance gaming tips:
- Installing games with custom installers like DVD setups and games you just extract (so no install) or an executable zip/rar.
- Game modding
- Using game trainers
- VR gaming
- How set up a DosBox game
- Games that don't have a Lutris install scrip
- Emulation (and therefor also, installing controllers)
One final question, I"m always told to install separate Vulcan drivers, is this really necessary ? I see no mention of this.
It is one thing to tell someone how to do it, but I'd rather you show us from start to finish without editing cuts.

the biggest hurdle right now is anti cheat software. Even though some anti cheat software supports wine/proton, the developers do not enable support on their side.

The Steam Deck has done so much for gaming on Linux! you made this vid half a year ago and now gaming on Linux is 10 times better, I've had FFXIV running for 7 hours non-stop at 150fps maximum graphics without a single dropped frame and my machine is silent. All while watching videos on the second monitor, really is insane.

There's also experimental emulators for the PS3 (RPCS3) and PSVita (Vita3k) that have very promising compatibility results.

Man, I remember struggling to play sims on Ubuntu over 10 years ago. Things have definitely improved; I can now play many steam games on Linux with no issues 😊

i give linux a chance but it always happens that you need to debug, search investigate and test its sometimes so much work that I really dont want to do while you try to relax i appreciate the effort the community is doing we need more companies to give native support to linux Update: i solve my initial issues and trying again lol i really love the customization parts

If anyone is interested in playing Half-Life, xash3d can be built even on a Raspberry Pi and allow you to play it at full speed. And dhewm3 can also be built for a Raspberry Pi and allow you to play Doom 3 at full speed. Elsewhere too, of course, but I just think it's really awesome that an SBC can play games at full speed which when they were brand new required beefier desktop hardware than what was normal.

For those that like Fedora, GloriousEggRoll, the protonGE guy, also manages Nobara that includes lots of gaming improvements to make getting everything going very easy.

I expected to see Nobara mention after custom kernels.

EmuDeck and Steam ROM Manager make the SteamDeck an absolutely fantastic little emulation machine as well, much easier than setting up an emulation front-end on the desktop even in Windows.

Switch to Proton Experimental, Enable it for all games, Install EAC, Install Battleeye. Next get a gaming kernel and the gamemode daemon, >>> cap your fps <<< to your monitor refresh rate like the consoles do to get better graphics.

I've had quite a lot of problems with Linux gaming on an nvidia Powered laptop (Asus with 950m). Recently I tried pop_OS with Lutris but absolutely no game would launch and I basically gave up. Even though I know my way around computers and I'm not afraid of the Terminal, I simply don't want to deal with this when I just want to game and relax. Everything should be simple and straightforward.

I also understand nVidia has never made it easy for Linux users. Probably my next machine will be an AMD machine. They have seen much more open with their standards.

I really appreciate these kinds of videos. You mentioned much more alternatives that I've never heard of. Thank you!

Steam has basically appropriated open source technology and then pushed it forward and incorporated it into steam. That's all you really need to know.

At this point it's important some of these dev support native Linux games too. The wine translation layer is super good but, Linux should get its own native ports like other platforms but there're still issues about market share and optimisation that companies don't provide it's a hit or miss. But current growth for gaming does show a positive future for gaming on Linux.

I was having lots of troubles with Lutris and Bottles last night so I'm glad to see there are more options. Very useful vid.

You have a typo in the chapter name "kernels". Great video as always! :D

Thanks for posting this. It looks like gaming really has come a long way on Linux since I last tried. I am hoping to be completely windows free before being forced to move to win11 to game.

My next build for gaming will not require Windows

Ah wish you mentioned Nobara Project when talking about Fedora as this is a project set up by GE to make Fedora more gaming focussed :)
