All my neighbors look at me weird when I get their leaves and shred them on my lawn (with low push mower). But my lawn is so healthy and needs no synthetics. I don't trim the flowers and even the annuals come back.

I've never done fall cleanup and totally agree with everything you've just said. I also think it just looks nice to have al the standing dead plants...at least much nicer than ground that's been scraped bare!

I watched this just in time because I was about to do that fall cleanup. Lots of coneflower, bee balm, and gallardia. I’ve waffled each year whether it was a good idea or not. Thanks for steering me in the right direction.

I knew you were a NUT. It takes one to know one right! Love what you do, we share a lot of the same values. I haven't started my orchard yet but I'm doing no dig gardening(trying my hand to start my own farm within the next couple years0, It's funny because people love the produce I give them, can't believe how little space and time I use to grow quite a bit of food. And then they come and ask me "what are you spraying for this or this?" I say "I don't spray anything" and they say "well you're a gardener you should know what to spray or do for all of these little pests". It's hard for them to grasp that letting Mother Nature do her thing actually works best. The more I learn, the less I do, the better it gets! That's why you're nuts Stefan, I love it!

I haven't put out a bag of leaves in over 5 years. Like you said I leave my perennials until early summer. Yes it doesn't look as good but the perennials keep coming back as strong as ever. And I'm comparing that to the old practice of trimming everything down in the fall. I watched birds nip off the seeds all winter. Knowing how important it is to let nature do but it was meant to do gives me less stress about the perceived mess.

You make perfect sense excepting I don't get any snow over winter. Aussie Jeff

You're so funny! You're preaching to the converted, so I'll tell neighbours to watch your channel, I wish we had snow here on Haida Gwaii. I've learned a lot about dandelions here, my fave medicine...eat the weeds, and leave the leaves. Very cool channel!

I have a part of my yard (side of my house) that depending on my mood I either call my "pollinator garden" or my "weed garden" I chose to let them die naturally without cutting because I wanted flowers to reseed. Then, after watching your videos I realized doing that has been doing so much good that I didn't realize I was doing just by being a lazy gardener. Yay!

Great video and explanation Stefan. I’m in Coldwater, Ontario and I’m doing my fall cleanup at the farm. We have too many huge maples and oaks and I have cleanup up all the leaves so they won’t ruin the lawn, but I shred them and along with my wood chipper make great mulch which I used around the my young fruit trees in our mini orchard. 100% agree about the seeds, if you remove bye bye seeds.

Stefan!
Another great informative video!
I just like to add how much sense you make...we are taught wrong in every way doing so much unnecessary labor!
I have been practicing what you preach for a couple decades..
I concentrate on the biology these days aiming for balance!
Can you recommend any books or videos on the soil web?
I have dedicated my life to permaculture and continue to stay inspired during your knowledgeable videos.
We spoke a while ago in regards to compost tea...
Ps...thanks for the tip on opening a feed bag correctly!!
Toot a loo ...2 to the left ( double stitching left corner!!
I have been owned a landscape company for years and never knew that!!!
Thanks
Be well

I hate how people remove all the leaves from the yard put in bags to go in the landfill. Depletion of nutrition from the land

Great video! Thanks! My house, gardens, and orchards are surrounded by woods. I haven't raked a leaf in a long, long time. Most of my perennials and annuals etc... still standing. The birds certainly like it too, sunflowers, marigolds, seedum etc... had so many beneficial insects around this year, love those wasps. I certainly save lots of seeds. No bare soil here. Working on a shelter belt by a pond and slough where all this comes into play. Every year I observe the wonderful nature around me I learn so much more. It is so energizing and empowering to see it fit together and work with it. Nature, in order to be commanded, must first be obeyed. Guess I'm nuts too. :) Normal is boring anyways.

So true learning so much from you for my dream farm/homestead. I will be so ready if and when I make that purchase 😬

Just the other day I saw a group of birds go to town on my chicory plant I let go to seed. I was wondering if they were eating the seeds; it sure did look like it.

Thank you for another important message. Everyone can do this whether they have a small yard or dozens of acres :)

Im going to share this video with my family who live in the country, who btw are allowing me to grow a small learning farm on their property next year. I’m really excited to have a space to experiment and to learn about plants and permaculture. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Also, from a previous video of yours, I’ve been brainstorming on how to test fruit for microplastics. I may not be able to test for how much microplastic is present but hypothesize that I could at least test for if microplastic is present. I just have to wait for my finals to be over to have time to delve into it more.
