I have a large number of huge maple trees on my 5 acres, so basically an infinite supply of leaves. I cover all my garden beds under about 6" - 9" of leaves in the fall. The winter snow compacts them into a mat that blocks all weed growth. I just pull aside the leaves in whatever spots I want to plant in the spring. I hardly do any weeding in the spring and summer. And over the next year, the previous year's layer of leaves composts right in place and adds to the soil. In four years we have gone from very poor clay soil to a very rich, black soil like you find in the forest.

Thank you. I was just trying to explain to my mom why I wanted to leave up the sunflower and mullein stalks so this will help. Home owners association can be a tad bit annoying.

So nice to see a Youtuber that's not OCD about a tidy garden!
I leave my Tithonia all winter and even when they topple the birds are all over them. So nice to see in winter when food is scarce! They will go to what seeds are left in the garden before the bird feeder! 😊

Well, it's a bit late, I cut my asparagus tops yesterday. But I did put about 6" of partially decomposing straw on top of the bed.

I left the sunflower stalks and in the spring I’ll plant a few vining veg around them, they are pretty sturdy.

I like the asparagus note. I started (from seed) a modest plot two years ago. No rush on harvesting. More of a "let's see if I can make this work" thing. I'll be sure to add a few leaves to ensure it has sufficient protection.
Cheers

I love that you talk about how we can ´cooperate´ with the animals in our garden. Love that...

I never thought of asparagus ferns as protection for the roots. Was always taught to cut them to the ground when they turned yellow.
So Luke, when do we cut them back? They get in the way for harvesting the shoots in the Spring.

Slugs and snails are a big problem in our area. Leaving the leaves seems like it just gives them moer places to stay. Any advice on reducing the number of slugs?

The deer took care of my asparagus, Swiss chard, and kale. I do have some kale and Swiss chard inside polytunnel last year made it all the way through zone5 winter. I love mulching with leaves. Besides using my vast amount of leaves, I graciously collect bagged leaves left at curbs.

We always mulch tje garden woth crushed up leaves. So beneficial for the soil! I'm glad I didn't pill my rainbow Swiss chard! (from your website). I'm amazed at how well it grows. This was my first year growing it, and I'll definitely grow it again.

We're leaving the leaves on our lawn this year. QUESTION...should they be left whole or mulched a bit with the mower?
We also have 2 containers with dried corn stalks that we'll be leaving, as well as the wildflowers in a big tub turned into a planter. Thanks for all your advice.

My favourite leafy greens are Savanah Mustard Greens.

Thank you I was always told to get the asparagus when it turns yellow ? I had a bad problem with asparagus beetles this year...

I love the content of your videos! I have one piece of constructive feedback; for shots where you aren’t using a tripod or stabilizer of some kind, the shots are too shaky for me to watch without getting a little sick. So I’ve been mostly listening to the content instead. Your visual stuff would improve a lot making the camera a bit more stable! Thanks for hearing me out.

I never cut my asparagus until spring because someone told me to do it then. Glad you gave me a great reason for doing so.

I would say the greens bit depends on the greens. My komatsuna gets sweeter at the root, but the greens go leathery with age of the plant.
