yeah, this really is a checkmate against the Prots. And that is why this is singlehandedly THE most avoided topic amongst those Sola Scriptura type of big name American Prot apologists.

When Jesus returns as judge what will be the determining factor on who gains eternal life and who doesn't? These arguments are unfruitful for spreading and supporting the Kingdom of God.

This argument is convincing only on a very superficial level. The fact that Orthodox and Catholic constantly make this argument shows that they have already lost the real argument, which is "Whose doctrine and practice are most in accord with the infallible Scriptures?". Since their doctrines are not to be found in the Scriptures, they must fall back on this argument that says, in essence, "Those are OUR Scriptures, so we get to decide what they really say!"

It is also a crazy non sequitur to say "The historic church correctly identified the canon of Scripture, therefore they were 100% accurate in their interpretations of those Scriptures." The Pharisees correctly identified the canon of Old Testament Scriptures, but they did not believe or understand or practice them.

We Protestants deny that the Orthodox or Roman Catholic churches of today are the same as "the historic church that compiled the Scriptures." A thousand years of manmade "Church tradition" (most of it the political intrigues of Rome and Constantinople) has made the modern churches very different institutions.
