Doctors Too Often Ignore PCOS

PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome, is a hormonal condition that affects over 5 million women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels. The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs. The symptoms can be quite unpleasant and many people goes years before receiving a diagnosis. While there is no definitive cure, there are treatment options you can discuss with your doctor.

I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

Finally, A doctor who acknowledges that PCOS exists! I was diagnosed when I was 16 and most doctors tell me it's a made-up "disease" When I ask why I have so many PCOS symptoms, they usually just shrug it off. PCOS takes a big enough mental toll without doctors adding to that by telling you it doesn't exist.
Doctor Mike, you're always right on the money with your videos.

Please do a main video on PCOS I am begging you. I am so passionate about the misdiagnosis of it and it being missed entirely even though it affects so many. Even the name is a misnomer because you don't even have to have cysts to have it. The endocrine system effects needs to be expounded upon big time because that's the main issue, not just the hormonal complications.

Still livid at my experiences with endocrinologists when seeking help for my teen daughter. I was dismissed as seeking "pills to make my daughter skinny". It was years of fighting with doctors and watching my daughter suffer until someone would take it seriously and she started getting the help she needed. There needs to be more attention paid to diseases that affect women.

PCOS needs more discussion. I'm glad it's getting more attention. It affects all women differently. Not all women will struggle with fertility or excess hair, it's a syndrome you never know how it will affect you.

I was diagnosed in early 2021 and went through a 5 month process of tests with an endocrinologist, cardiologist, neurologist, because my doctor didn't believe I had PCOS when I suggested that's what I had. I was misdiagnosed multiple times, before my doctor finally diagnosed me with PCOS. it was a long and frustrating process and I'm so glad you brought this up and acknowledged it.

I diagnosed myself with PCOS from an article I read at the hairdresser's. Set an appointment, ran the tests, and look who was right.

It's so nice to see a doctor talk so openly and honestly about PCOS. Please consider making a longer video about this, it would be so helpful to so many people.

Thank you for speaking about PCOS Dr Mike!! 👏 As a PCOS dietitian I find all too often my patients come in frustrated and lost because so many medical professionals have written them off. It’s nice to see the topic get a little more research and headway nowadays so women can get the help they deserve 💙

Please correct me if I’m wrong, I’m just a med student with an interest in this topic as I have PCOS.
The name is actually a misnomer, it’s called PCOS because you can have the APPEARANCE of cysts on your ovaries but they are not actually cysts (which is another thing which has it’s own complications), they’re follicles. And you don’t even need to have the polycystic ovary appearance to be diagnosed with PCOS, in fact it can also be present in healthy individuals. Therefore some people are proposing to change the name as it’s primarily a metabolic/endocrine disorder related to insulin levels and sex hormones rather than anything wrong with the ovaries
