The SATA SSD market went pretty quiet in recent years, thanks to the rise of NVMe SSDs, including Samsung’s own PCIe Gen 3 and now Gen 4 offerings too - review coming next week on the 980 Pro by the way so make sure you are subscribed so you don’t miss it! But, Samsung decided now was a good time to launch a new SATA SSD. It’s called the 870 EVO, and it’s not quite as good as I’d hoped.

I bought this SSD last year and its a fast, reliable drive with great performance. I was playing Assassin's Creed Origins on my PC the other day and the game took about a total of 12 seconds to load. 6 seconds to load to the tittle screen and about 6 seconds to load into the game.

I hate when tech reviewers compare stuff to the latest and greatest thing on the market. I am looking at the 2, 5 ssd over an nvme ssd because the device Im using is only a 2, 5 ssd capability. Please in the future compare apples with apples and pears with pears.

Speed is only one part to consider. It's good enough. TBW or the drive longevity, integrity of data, and warranty are much more important. Also, user friendly cloning and management software is a key. For these reasons I buy Samsung, and hesitant to get other brands.

My 840 Pro, works like the first day after 5 years. I bought recently a brand new EVO 860 for my games only.

Just installed the Samsung 870 evo in my pc today and load times of Mass Effect Andromeda are 3 to 3, 5 times faster than with my HDD, I couldn't be happier with this ssd which, foronly 50 euros has even a Dram cache that most other ssd in this price range don't have.

I bought it several years ago, still working without any problems.

You guys get obsessed with the writing speeds and the windows boot times, like you are going to write all day to this drive, or if you gonna save years by booting windows 1 second faster. It's not about that, this drive is more expensive because it has dram cache inside, that is it has it's own DDR memory inside, which makes it more stable and realiable and brings down the latancy and response times, because it doesn't have to constantly go back and forth to your computer's DDR RAM, it just uses it's own. I can tell you that because I am coming from the bx500 to the 870 evo, and I can tell you that the difference is night and day. I am definitely selling that bx500, that does not have the dram cache chip inside.

Pretty sure this is just a simple refresh of 800 EVO line
We all know SATA 3 is at its limits, plus it's cheaper than the 860 was at the time of its release

This is a great video! Hopefully Samsung takes the feedback into account in the next refresh.

I highly recommend this SSD, evo 870 is quite fast especially if you are simply going to used it on your ps4. I paid 220 Australian buckaroonies.

500gb 870 evo user here. I had a 3 year old laptop with a 1T toshiba hdd and it needed about 1.30 to 3 mins just to boot up and to open chrome it needed about the same as to boot up. Now it boots up in 10 to 15 secs and chrome opens in at most 2 secs.

Well you mentioned 860 a few times in the video, why not show a direct speed comparison as

I actually own the 1TB variant of this drive and I'm pretty happy with it - I have an ASUS ROG laptop that only has one M.2 port and space for a 2.5" drive - I got both a 1TB NVME and 1TB sata drive over christmas for less than what one 2TB would have cost. The performance is right about what you were getting, but sometimes I'll get "burst" speeds that are higher. For others who find themselves in the posiion I'm in, it's a great solution.

I wouldn't touch WD's blue with a 10ft pool. The've already been exposed for switching to using inferior parts no them that are prone to failing. Furthermore, the 5year warranty does not cover repairs or data recovery, they just take your old drive and replace it with another one. Some of these drives have been known to fail suddenly without any warning or gradual degradation signs that normally signal it's time to protect your data and move it to a new drive. This is the first drive i've owned in 25 years that failed in this manner.

It looks to me, from Samsung marketing materials, 860 Evo also got the v-nand technology which is to allow this controversial turbowrite. Which means 860 and 870 will both slow down when the buffers are fully filled. Have I overlooked something?

Bro I got this for 40 dollars a 500gb and its on its way but i have a 1tb harddrive that takes up to 20mins to boot and open chrome this is gonna be a huge upgrade

I have used Samsung SSDs since the 830 series. And in my world the 850 Evo was the last SATA drive from Samsung that was worth buying. The 860 Evo was in my opinion a small downgrade from the 850 Evo, and it looks like that the 870 Evo also looks like a downgrade from the 860 Evo. That sucks :(

300 or 500mb wright speed do not matter at all for the smaller drives..

With 300mb per second it takes 14 min to fill up a 250gb drive.
With 500mb per second it takes 8 min to fill up a 250gb drive..

Totally fine..

You also need an SSD source to even get these numbers. If you have your files on an external HDD, it can only write at around 130mb max anyways..
