it's lighthearted banter. they obviously have a great deal of respect for each other's work to be on the same stage together. people out here taking it personally, remove yourself from the equation.

The funniest part in this clip is Dawkins's face: "yup, I definitely should stay out of this, hell yeah..."

Mathematics works because, if it didn't, we'd invent something that did. Which we did. And we called it Mathematics.

Tyson's a clown compared to Greene. The only reason why he sounds like he's "winning" the debate is because he speaks louder and makes some jokes - whereas Greene is way more humble and respectful.

This is hilarious but folks should not be led to believe that Tyson is poking fun especially at Brian Greene or string theory in any dismissive or denigrating way. It's a friendly jest between colleagues. String theory is already understood to be a kind of transformation of canonical quantum field theory via AdS/CFT correspondence, while incorporating a candidate unification of gravity with quantum mechanics that has been able to produce (for instance) the correct entropy for a black hole. The problems which string theory hasn't "figured out" are very much the ones which no theory in science has. And to be clear, the language of string theory is absolutely mathematical. Advancements in string theory are continuing to contribute to the field of pure mathematics, such as calculating the number of curves in certain hyperdimensional manifolds. So there's nothing in Brian Greene's work that is really leading him to consider another language than maths for physics; his question was in the spirit of hypothetical pondering.

If a theist, when asked to explain the nature of God, said "I don't lose sleep over it, I celebrate it." ... I think Tyson would find that to be an unacceptable answer.

Great fun. This is the type of witty dialogue that inspires.

I am one of those holding the opinion that mathematics isn't invented, but discovered, and that is why it is so descriptive of reality.

Tyson was just teasing Brian no conflict here, just good fun & stimulating conversation.

They are intellectual heavyweights xD They can handle the good banter and strong needling xD

Mathematics isn't the language of the universe. It's a limited realm we've created to better understand the one in which we created it. It is a simple computational tool, but short of a universal computer.

really hard to have that many impressive human beings in the same room at the same time. This was epic.

I think Greene is more of a scientist than Tyson is... It's only something out of my brain, but isn't it awesome that something out of my brain coincide with the intrinsic nature of the universe?

I would have loved to have seen that panel talk. Thanks for the clip.

Because the universe told me. Great line!

Elemental matter existed before humans (well, mostly one human: Mendeleev) constructed the periodic table. Did explicability/predictability of the universe's behavior exist before humans invented mathematics? Discuss.
