This is so accurate ! My ex used to watch everyone and then judge them or make fun of them. I could never understand why he seemed so interested in everyone around us. I just thought it was because I was too boring and he thought every else to be more interesting. Thank you Anoushka, everytime I listen to you, another piece falls into place.

I absolutely saw this in the narcissist AND her narcissistic mother....both stared at people in a strange way with a look that was peculiarly blank and devoid of "life"....it was VERY unsettling....It still gives me the "chills" to recall how dark those eyes were....😱

That was the first unusual trait I noticed about my narcissist ex. The first moment we began dating, she would stare at me intensely, like I was the last pork-chop everyday! At first, it was kind of flattering, but then it became deeply uncomfortable. It was so intense, that random people passing by us would notice and tell her to STOP! Now that our relationship is finally over, I STILL have no clue to WHO she really was, because she was completely mirroring me in the beginning. Although I should probably have hated her for all the stress that she's inflicted in my life, I somehow still pity her. Lord knows, I tried everything humanly possible to help her before our break-up. She said she loved me, but her actions were always 150% the opposite.

Mind used to read my lips to study my words and then she would use the same phrases and words as me talked. She would tell me she loved the same music as me. She made me feel like we were soulmates. She even warned me before we started dating, but I didn't understand. Now I do. Thank you so much!

So true! It made me feel uncomfortable when he would be staring at everyone else asking in such a contemptuous tone “what they doing?” I be like “who cares”? Whether it was in traffic/ party/store if someone is caught looking at him he would get so suspicious but he would have to be looking at them to notice them looking at him?!…right? He would never see it in a positive way..he never gave benefit of doubt especially in texting! Always assuming the worst. It was draining!

I’m not sure about this, as narcissist are unaware and can’t or won’t admit we don’t fully know what they think as you’ll never get a straight answer. I think they people watch because it’s a way to glean social interaction and gather what looks like empathy or to see others worse off than themselves in whatever way. My narcissist also used it a way to label others too, and more bizarrely to sexualise those that appealed to them

Timing! I’ve been having all these memory-pops of when my parents, or ex, would STARE at me when I didn’t agree with them, or jump in to enable their narrative.

As a former Freeze-Fawn responder, I learned quickly as a child to anticipate their needs, and appease them immediately, if not sooner.

As I began to differentiate and individuate, my boundaries were seen as a BETRAYAL. Oh well.

Every time I would be out with my soon to be ex wife, she would stare at people and have something negative to say about them, in the end I’d say, why are you so interested in every other stranger, and not interested in just enjoying yourself? Baffled me every time.

I’m a people watcher myself, and try not to be critical or judgmental. I grew up with an abusive, narcissistic mother so I had to read her at all times to save myself from her. But, I don’t watch people to do all that the narc does. There is a difference. I’m loving and supportive of others, which is the opposite behavior of the narcs!

Another commenter said a couple of ppl they knew would stare, yet have blank eyes and non expressive faces as they stared.

And you catch them doing it more than once…..it’s very strange to feel something is up and turn your head to view someone doing this….

Staring at you with this dead eyed and face look ! It’s a creepy feeling!
