In this video, we see a brave homeowner in Pickering, Ontario, who takes matters into her own hands when she catches thieves attempting to steal her Lexus RX450 right off her driveway. The video shows the dramatic scene as the woman yelling towards the car and scares off the thieves, who quickly flee the scene.

Maryam Ali thwarted car thieves attempting a new tactic known as a CAN injection attack. When she noticed her car's headlights turning on at night, she confronted the thieves, interrupting their attempt. The surveillance video revealed the thieves targeting the headlights to access wiring, allowing them to manipulate the car's central hub and start the vehicle. This tactic, part of tech-savvy car theft methods treating cars like computers, bypasses immobilizers, a key deterrent in car theft for the past two decades. Ali's brave confrontation sheds light on evolving threats and emphasizes the need for new security standards to counter such attacks.

Those thieves have more rights in Canada than the car owner.

This is an example of a CAN bus attack, where thieves exploit weaknesses in car security systems to gain unauthorized access to vehicles. It's worth noting that when computer operating systems have vulnerabilities, Microsoft or Apple usually release patches to address them. So why haven't car manufacturers taken responsibility for protecting consumers from high-tech car theft? It's important to get involved and send a message to your MP to request legislation that will hold automakers accountable for ensuring the security of their vehicles. Our government should take a proactive approach to this issue to prioritize the safety of drivers.

Buy a manual. Thieves don't know how to drive.

How easy is it to force unlock a lexus! Lexus should be liable for this.

In case of accidents (just trigger the sensors) the car always unlocks. For safety….. it’s design.

This is for anyone but especially Canadians and Californians...Proactive detering theft can be low cost and very effective, as well as lawful...All thieves especially tech theives have fear being bitten by barking dogs...take time to setup motion sensors but not just lights
Setup sound motion sensors with growling- barking dogs as soon as they get 5 feet from your expensive ride, will work better than a lot of security systems they are not afraid of.
I owned 25-35lb Sheltland Sheepdogs who work like motion sensors for many years and
never had a car or home break in attempt even

My advice is invest in a house with garage first before trying to purchase a Lexus!

$2500(CAD) is all you need to almost guarantee your car will never be stolen. Install an IGLA (electronic kill switch) and a Compustar Pro T13. Undefeatable combo. They’d have to literally tow your car (and they’d have to not give two f*cks about the alarm and lights blaring while towing).

This is why I keep my car in the garage.

Avoid buying the top five most stolen makes in USA/Canada: Acura/Honda, Lexus/Toyota, Jeep/Dodge, Land Rover and Ford. Next, use a steering wheel club lock. And if you can, stick to older vehicles with physical, metal ignition keys - you can still get nice VWs, Nissan, Subarus, GM and others from 2018 or so thus equipped. This will decrease the odds of your car being stolen. Bonus points if you drive a manual transmission. For example, no one in Africa wants your 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander with 2wd and manual shift.
