Speed up an old iPad.

My old iPad was getting super slow so I played around with settings, mostly disabling background services. It has made a big difference.

My iPhone XS and iPad Pro 11 2nd gen don’t need any changes to perform well.

In this video
iPad mini 2 released 2013.
Dual core 1.3Ghz, 1GB ram
2nd Gen iPod touch released 2008.
533Mhz single core, 128mb ram

Just ordered one of these solar powerbanks. Reviews don’t rate the solar charging effectiveness but it’s a good price for the capacity and the lights could come in handy for my 3d printer

My Amazon UK store

Changes I have made
Shut down apps
Clear history
Disable JavaScript
Turn off background app refresh
Turn of auto app updates
Turn off notifications
Reduce motion
Turn off location for apps that don’t need it
Keep 2GB storage free
Power off completely more regularly
Last resort restore erase all contents and settings

Hi Lee. I use the clear cashe option on my old Ipad. You can clear cashe by holding power in till you get the slidebar for closing and at that moment you hold the home bottom until you come back to thee main screen. This way you clear the cashe and you device is a bit faster. Alle apps that are open at the time will start over again. It helps from time to time. Try it out, I will not harm your device.
Thanx for some great videos, and sorry for my poor English, but I'm Danish ;-)

I have to try this on the slow old iPads my church uses. They just run a few things like light control, thermostat control, and a browser but they are still rather slow. Thank you so much!!!

That's why I like your channel. You like myself are interested in compact, low cost/low energy, yet powerful devices which can works for years and how we get the most out of them.

I can not remember when I bought my iPad2 mini, and also still running. I still use it for (video)chat, podcasts, and an occasional web-search. Also thumbs up for the battery still healthy, but I was always very careful when charging (25-75% rule).

A lot of these tips can help with Android tablets too. Turning off notifications and permissions for a lot of apps will save battery and CPU. Disabling or uninstalling weird apps you don't use or want. It usually takes me an hour to setup any new device because of all the stuff I have to turn off, but it's well worth it, and all of my devices are quite snappy years later.

Thanks, found that very helpful. I have 2 iPads (basically just kept my older one when I got an iPad 8Gen one) The older one is mainly in the kitchen & used for basic tasks ie. browsing the BBC News Site, listening to podcasts etc. With just16GBs was almost out of space - so these tips will help keep it 'working & useful' for a few more years :-)

Mine will not update past 9.3.6 and Apple state that it won't...not sure if there's a work around there?

Thought about doing this on my gen 1 iPad w/ 512kb, but it probably won't help. Luckily I can use it as $200 trade-in for a Tab S8.

Useful video as I have recently inherited an iPad mini 2 which I was going to set up for an elderly friend for some basic functions. While I realised it would have an older version of the O/S and wouldn't update any further, I didn't realise it simply wouldn't install certain apps (such as Gmail) because of the version it is running - which I haven't encountered with older Android devices (I assume the Google store just deploys the last compatible version of the app in question). Not having any real expertise in iPad devices is there anything that can be done to install a legacy version of this, or any app, or is this Apple doing what it does best by rendering a device obsolete when they think it's got too old?
