I was thinking Logan would stop you from installing non-ECC RAM on your NAS xD

finally, that white fractal case he had sitting in the back is finally put to use!

Paul, you should probably grab a couple of similar sized USB drives and put them into your Nas for mirroring the OS to. Freenas 9.3 allows you to mirror your OS across multiple drives. With USB drives you can just replace the bad USB drive when you get an alert about a failing OS drive. Freenas can automatically mirror the OS onto the replacement USB once it is plugged in and pointed to for replacement of the bad drive.

I've been contemplating building myself something similar. I definitely want the ability to access my files remotely. I think it would be great if you eventually do a video of getting the firmware on this thing set up, especially the steps taken in order to access this thing remotely from the internet. I find your videos extremely informative, and the information generated by your videos to be extremely valuable. I look forward to seeing the process of setting up free nas from your point of view.

FreeNAS suggests using ECC ram and 1GB/TB. Best practice to go with what the developers suggest. I also have a freenas build, but I'm using some server grade hardware with 32TB RaidZ2. Also the case is not the best to go with if hotswap is needed.

No ECC on freeNAS? A lot of freeNAS guys say that running freeNAS on normal ram is like running a mission critical server without a UPS.

I recently upgraded my NAS too :D newegg.ca had a huge deal on 5TB WD Blacks. So I splurged and slapped 5 of them in raid5 for 19TB of storage, replacing a mishmash of Seagate and WD Red 2TB drives which ran with about 10TB of storage. I'm surprised Logan didn't mention it in the video, but you might want to think about going with ECC memory. It's highly recommended with a NAS system.

Interesting timing on this video. I finished a preliminary build on my NAS last night. Mine was a spare AMD FX processor and board that came out of my wife's computer before I swapped her out for an i7-5820k. And as the AMD FX supports ECC RAM, that was the first thing I swapped out, along with having a pair of 4TB WD Reds for initial storage.

And I say "preliminary" on this as the case it's currently isn't where it will stay. And the RAM will eventually be expanded to 32GB and the storage out to 32TB raw, 16TB effective.

I have a Q30 from 45Drives running FreeNas with 30 WD 4TB Enterprise drives. I use it at my office as my main video server. I have 4 video editors working on it, all connected to it with a dedicated 10GbE cable. The server has 2 dual 10GbE cards. And a a 1GbE card to connect to our sales guys and producer computers.

i build mine to fractal node 304 over a year ago and im very happy with it . i didnt use free nas but instead i used normal windows . because i use it mostly only for home sharing and backups of my pcs . got 12 tb WD red and ssd to run the os. i used intel i3 / 8gb ram. running all the time without any issues . very good case for this :)

I built a FreeNAS server a little over a year ago out of my old gaming computer (which is incredibly handy because FreeNAS really does need quite a bit of RAM to work with) and I love the thing. I eventually got a couple of red drives for it, and I have it set up to download television shows automatically, rename them to a standard format and organize them into folders, and I rip movies and music for personal use too. Then I picked up a couple Chromecasts for my televisions, which work great with Plex, and I'm happy.

I do recommend, though, that you get a regular hard drive for your FreeNAS install. I've had problems with running it off a USB drive. I used an older 80 gig laptop HDD and it's worked perfectly ever since.

What actually happened but was censored:
Paul "How did Cane know I was building a NAS right now?"
Logan "We're the Tek Syndicate, we know everything."
_fade for Logan turning into a Terminator_

Dude you flipping read my mind. I just built a FreeNas box and I'm at about the same step as you. I have the Plex jail setup and working with my Samsung TV. I also want to be able to remote in as well as give other people access too it even if it's only ftp. I'll be staying tuned for the next one on this. Awesome build man keep up the good work.

ZFS does NOT need 1gb per 1tb of disk space. It will work just fine with very little ram. Companies like Synology and QNAP sell very moderate devices with small amounts of RAM lile 2gb or 4gb to be used as NAS and they work just fine, they know what they are doing. On top of that, a ZFS developer debunked this myth on reddit. ZFS DOES need 5gb of RAM per tb of disk for the deduplication table if dataset deduplication is enabled, which is a feature that is not recommended to enable for most use cases.

I tried FreeNAS once. It had a few minor problems that were largely some development holes.

When I contacted the FreeNAS guys, instead of trying to take time to help with the problems they essentially called me an idiot then sarcasticaly "offered me money back".

The minor problems along with the attitude was enough for me to swear them off.

I ended up just running IIS for my file server. I honestly think the fact IIS is part of Microsoft's server suite scares people off, but its rather easy to setup and there are a ton of tutorials out these days. Since you can get copies of Windows 10 Pro for just $19; I'd highly suggest just breaking down and learning it; it's really not hard.

When I migrated over to using a lot more space for mostly videos, I turned to Emby. They have a great community. Sometimes they jump to conclusions, but they listen a lot and admit when they jumped the gun.

glad you built it in this case, I had no idea that Fractal had an itx case that housed so many drives.

One thing I would suggest for a media server is Plex. I am not sure how easy it would be to setup on FreeNAS, but it is a very powerful media server with some very nice features. I run this at home on my readyNAS Ultra and it is fantastic.
