just a note, if you get a router that supports DD-WRT you can do link aggregation on any home router and then you don't need a managed switch.

Optimal drive numbers are 2^x + parity level (so 3, 5, 9 for single parity, 4, 6, 10 for double parity). In all cases you get drive size in base-2 bytes minus parity drives minus some misc. overhead. So you'll end up with more like 7TB in that case (RAID-Z2, 4 disks worth of data, 2 lost to parity).

people just to be clear Link Aggregation does not give you more throughput its main purpose is for link redundancy, adding another 1Gig card will give a additional 125MBps(1000/8) total throughput for additional flows. it does not mean that you get 250MBps on a single flow, since the hashing is usually controlled by SRC-IP and DEST-IP or SRC-MAC and DEST-MAC or vice versa, it allows for the unit to handle additional flows per interface, Ethernet cannot Bond bandwidth which would give you additional speed and transfer pipe, the Purpose of LACP is for automatic link detection so spanning-tree dosent goes nuts when a interface failure occurs. just putting that out there so that people dont go nuts a buy all these NIC cards expecting faster upload speeds, the true solution for ethernet is to look for something that is 10GigE capable, which allots for total throughput of 1.25GBps(10000/8)

FreeNAS requires a minimum of 8 GB of ram to run then 1 GB extra ram per TB of Hard Drives you add.  This is because it forces you to use the ZFS file system that requires ram for caching.  Check out Open Media Vault for most of the features without the ridiculous ram requirements.
