Freenas Build Making a NAS from an old PC, Can Freenas 9.10 work? A true test.

I have seen some videos that claim they are using old PC parts that are just lying around. Really a GTX 980, a super cool case and 16 gigs of DDR4 ram just laying around, with 48 TB drives to boot???? Really!!
I decided I would take a old PC I had stored in my garage, and an old case and power supply, and use the lasted version of Freenas. See what happens.

In case of motherboard failure, is that possible to move hard drives into a new system?

Grat Video. I have also wanted to do this for a while. Question....how difficult is it to set this up in a manner that I can keep it in our home but also backup my office PC from another location. I have a good router. I assume there is some setup but I am concerned about security. Anyone know how to do this?

I wouldn't be so sure to jump to the conclusion that "nobody would need that much storage..."!!! After all I am 55 years old, and started working on computers when I was 15 years old!! Think about that for a it was 1981 when I was 15 years old, and I started tinkering with computers on a Commodore 64K BEFORE you were ever born!!

Kids these days think computers are "new" and that "geeks" like me are "new" as well!!! I have literally been generating data since before Ronald Reagan took office, and for the past 30 some odd years or so I have a huge collection of data to my credit!! Of course what I learned years ago is totally out of date, but I can do things on computers that even some kids today can't wrap their heads around!!

And while I edit video too, I also edit music and audio files, and even edit and alter photos as I need them!! So my data collection is MASSIVE to put it mildly!! I have a hard drive dock and about 30 hard drives FULL of data that I use in that I also have another 30 external hard drives that are in enclosures I have to access as well too at any given time!! The external drives are only 320 gigabytes BUT the drives for my dock are all between 500 gigabytes to 4 terabytes and everything in between!!!!

Further I still run a Windows ME machine, I have a Windows XP machine, four Windows 7 rigs and lastly my main workhorse which runs Ubuntu Studio on it!! THEN I have 12 grand kids all with their tablets and gizmos (Smart phones and what not) and then I have a smart TV in my home now too!! PLUS my own smart phones as well!!! So sharing data around my home is insane at the very least, then I have friends that all own tech as well too!!! I have over 30, 000 songs on disks, and 35 years VHS movies I am STILL converting to digital I want to watch again and keep!! Which that collection alone of VHS tapes is around 2000 tapes and I have another 7000 cassette tapes, 3000 CDs and just got rid of my vinyl record collection of about 1500 albums!! So my "data" isn't limited to digital media at all!! And I am slowly digging through content I want added to my digital footprint!!

Besides I started collecting car magazines too back when I was about 6 years 1971, and have about 50 years of the collection I want to turn into digital content as well too!! In my "ultimate" collection I want to be able to pull up my data when I WANT IT, and WHEN I NEED IT, which currently is a total nightmare at any given time!! Which is why I need the most "bang I can get" out of a media server, and my current NAS has only 6 three terabyte hard drives in it!!

anyone else cringed anytime he said nas, that said i've used everything from an athlon x2 to a dual core atom for my nas builds, currently on a retired from gaming i7 4790k which i also use for plex and a few dockers. i do think most builds are overkill but if you have the hardware i say use it instead of it collecting dust.

"Cheap Build" or "Budget Build" is the reason why I stopped reading Hot Rod Magazine!! They (Hot Rod) would always have a cover car with some subtitle that read "Kid builds budget car on Newspaper Route Money", then you look at the car and it had Boyd Coddington wheels and steering wheel on it, and a $10, 000.00 motor built by some professional speed shop!! I started calling "BULLSHT" on their so called "budget builds" and then even their "Junkyard" projects had "sponsored parts" on them that "real people" with "real jobs" could never afford nor do we have the contacts to "get the same parts" from those same sponsors!! So in short their $5000 Junkyard "budget" car had over $30, 000 worth of brand new parts on it, and the labor of people who make $80, 000 a year annual gross working on the thing to boot!!

Funny how people throw out the words "Cheap" or "budget" or "affordable" then use parts "real people" can't afford!! In my case I work to pay bills, and in my life BILLS come first!! In a lot of these NAS builds it would take me ten years easily to save my money to afford the parts they use to build these "budget" computers!! And it would take me 90 years of my life to afford those "budget built" hot rods as well too!! And by the time I saved all that technology would have changed making the whole "budget build" insanely pointless and totally stupid to keep dreaming about!! After all "today's budget build" is tomorrows e-waste, and by the time I could afford the parts in their parts list, most of that stuff would have been crushed for scrap metal, or hasn't worked in 30 years at all anyhow!!

I want my 19mins Of time back!! Lol this video guide as everyone is clapping about, is honestly terrible you didn't say what MB you used and why nor did you specify what raid you did, which is the most important part of an installation. Shame on you
