Freestyle Swimming Test Set

In swimming your baseline kick speed is determined how fast you can go with fins compared to without. If you are able to kick within 10 seconds of your fins time, you have good ankle flexibility and are on the right track. In this video head coach Devin tests the Race Club campers in order to help them understand where they are and how they can improve. Find out how Marissa, Daniella, Owen, Alex and Stone do in this simple yet critical set. And be sure to try this on your own and let us know your results in the comments!

Its crazy to think that Popov could kick 27.5s for 50LCM without fins!

great way to estimate, today my son is having his swim sesssion. gonna try this for sure. just a quick question sir, the same method can be applied for fly, back as well isn't it? not sure how good we can use the fins in breast stroke kicking. please assist. thanks in advance.

My problem is a huge difference between dolphin and flutter kick times. Fly is always 6-7 seconds faster per 50. Just can’t feel nearly the same amount of power in freestyle kick.

Great test, how do you adjust for a 25 pool?

Great little test set. But shouldn't the title of the video by "Freestyle Kicking Test Set" not swimming.

It is a pity that slow motion shots of underwater kicking are missing. As a finswimming club coach with 35 years of experience, I would interpret the results as follows:
Crawl kick with fins should be done by stretched knee. Daniela does it the best (fins stiffness and size of the fins seems to fit her). The others have insufficiently stretched knees at kicking with fins.
And vice versa. Daniela don´t bends her knees enough while swim crawl kicking (without fins). It has nothing to do with ankle flexibility. In general, swimmers who swim with fins better than without them have better ankle flexibility.
