The 90s in Colombia was hell, we were essentially a failed state and it is a miracle the country survived

First off well start off with one of the few positives, you had political crisis in the 80s which led to the replacement of the conservative and authoritarian 1886 Constitution and the implementation of the new far more democratic and liberal 1991 Constitution which essentially did away with 2 party system and was written by a constitutional assembly composed of various members of Colombian society not just the traditional Liberal Party and Conservative Party but by the recently demobilized M-19 guerrilla and the various ethnic and political factions

Now to the bad, 3 presidential candidates were murdered during the 1990 presidential election, then came the economic opening under Gaviria which led to the destruction of a lot national industry and agriculture,

Also the war against the cartels which left thousands dead and eventually lead to them slowly fading out after Pablo was killed in 93 and the Cali Cartel was dismantled

towards the end of the 90s with the cartels weakened the guerrillas such as the FARC-EP and ELN began taking over the production and sale of cocaine which made them super powerful and allowed them to control large parts of the country cutting off major highways and kidnapping thousands of people attacking and capturing towns and even coming close to encircling the capital Bogotá,

Then the paramilitaries arose as a response to the guerrillas becoming strong and committed some of the worst massacres known in Colombian history wiping out towns full of innocent civilians, with sometimes complicit help or negligence by the National Army

then there was 1994 presidential elections which Ernesto Samper’s won but later a case was opened against him called the Proceso 8000 which basically stated that Ernesto Samper’s presidential campaign was financed by the Cali Cartel which led the US to decertify Colombia in the war against drugs and revoke Samper’s visa which further deincentivized foreign investment in the country and strained relations with one of our main economic partners. The military under General Bedoya almost committed a coup but he was sacked before he could do anything and Samper served his full term

, in 98 Pastrana was elected and was a disaster and to add to that a horrible economic recession hit in 98 which could have been even more catastrophic had it not been by the quick thinking solutions of the Minister of Finance at the time implemented.

This violence robbed the country of many Famous political figures, intellectuals, and sports players were assassinated by the cartels, paras, guerrillas, organized crime and the state such as Carlos Pizzaro, Carlos Galán, Jaime Garzon, Alvaro Gomez Hurtado, Andres Escobar, and countless others
