My great grandfather was a British soldier captured by the Japanese. He came back with severe PTSD I was told, he had no weight to him, he was skin and bones, he'd never talk about what happened to him. He'd just have nightmares and think he was still captured when he woke up. I can confirm, don't be captured by the Japanese in WW2.

For those wondering why would've been terrible to be captured by the Japanese: they used almost every war prisoner as guinea pigs for horrible experiments. The ones who suffered the most were the Chinese.

Grandpa of mine was a guerilla soldier for the Philippines during the 2nd world war, he and his brother were captured by the Japanese and were sentenced to march alongside American and other Filipino pow in the infamous Bataan death march, I haven't met him since he passed away back in 1991 but from what I heard he survived by escaping in the jungle his brother wasn't as fortunate.

From what I've read, the Italian camps and occupations, in Europe at least, were far from the worst. My Grandma in Ukraine SSR was "lucky" enough to have her city occupied by Italian who treated the locals with more respect than the actual locals to each other.
