Strange how the USSR went from having nary a lightbulb in it and being an unstable wreck in 1917 to being one of the most advanced and industrialized nations on the planet and having a significant space program in 1961. And furthermore, it's competitor, the US, also advanced at a similar rate, racing neck-and-neck to determine the fate of the world.

It's baffling what humans can do.
