Can the new, 2021 BMW M4 Competition outpace a PDK-equipped Porsche Cayman GT4 around a circuit? Steve Sutcliffe takes both to the limit to find out...

The G82 M4 Competition has already proved itself as one of the most capable sports coupes on sale - an explosive turbocharged straight-six and a sharp, beautifully balanced chassis combine to make it a serious weapon on track. But is it faster than the brilliant Porsche Cayman GT4, which has a mid-mounted, naturally-aspirated flat-six, a PDK dual-clutch gearbox and far less weight to hall around? We find the answers in this on-track review.

I’ve always had and loved M3s. I now have a GT4. It’s a different level.

Im a porsche man but lets not ignore how impressive it is for that heavy M4 filled with luxury items to have come close to a purpose built track car being the GT4.

2 tenths slower with a "mistake" mind u if he had gone flawless around that track and came in a full second slower i still take the GT4... Its art!

I’m a BMW man, but I’d have the GT in a heartbeat

Even if the M4 lapped the Cayman… I would rather have the Cayman just on its look.

When a BMW man grows up he wants a Porsche

I’d say: PDK if you really intend to go on trackdays and such, but if you’ll just keep it on the street, enjoy a manual gearbox in every car you can, while you can. Who cares if it’s slower. It’s a joy we’ll soon lose altogether save for (then) classic cars.

Stunning lap time by the M4. Never thought it would beat the 350KG lighter and mid engined Porsche on what is a short and twisty circuit. Strangely opposite result to Jason Platos lap at the faster castle Combe circuit where the Porsche was faster and I thought the BMW would win !!

imagine deciding to buy a car just because is faster on a random circuit

And the drive home in the M4…. Pick up the kids from school, pop to Tesco’s and pick up a weeks shopping. As a daily, the M4 wins hands down. As a track toy yes I would have the GT4.

Had a previous gen M4...currently have a 981 GT4. Both are excellent cars, just like their current replacements. Bottom line based on my real world experience is basically goal dependent. If you want to have the most potent occasional track day or twisties tool, hands down, the GT4 . If this test continued into even just 6 to 8 laps at this track, the M4 brakes would be taxed severely. I mean its a porky Bavarian sausage. If you want a daily missile that has back seats and can keep up with just about anything, then the M4 is probably a better choice. I'm hoping the new s58 motor in the G80/2 M3/4's won't have the same issues the S55 faces ( crank hub-cooling, etc ) .

They should test them both over 10 or 20 Laps and then see, which car can hold its lap time the longest. Wont be the M4 imho.

Suggestion for the next Shoot Out: Huracan vs RS6. Makes the same amount of sense then M4 vs GT4

Jason Plato had different results in his test. Makes me wonder if the mistake Steve made is the reason for this result. He should’ve gone back and did another set of laps in each car to get a clean result.

As an M3 owner and a BMW fan, I can honestly say I'd buy the gt4

Naturally aspirated for me. It’ll hold its value way better, sound better, and a pure drivers car.
