AIR INTAKES ARE USELESS?

No, intakes are not useless, but they aren't magical either.

Nah, if it flows better it’s either filtering less OR it has more surface area. That’s the other trade off to balance, size.

U know what annoys me people who buy pod filters for a N/A car and don’t even have a heat shields, better off with the stock air filter

I put an air intake on a v6 Ford probe. It was SOO restricted that it didn't run right for the first 20 seconds while the computer adjust the new air fuel ratios. It sounded so much better, but the if any extra hp was not noticeable.

One, a good filter upgrade is one with a greater filter area - so that less air volume is passing across each square CM of filter material - results in lower pressure differential across the media AND filters just as well.
Two, you can now hear turbo/BOV noises out your induction piping because the air-passage from the noise source to the atmosphere is less of a muffler. There is a direct correlation between pressure waves exiting the system more freely and lower intake flow restriction - meaning, they are both (separate) products of the same condition. Each small improvement in air delivery to the compressor reduces back pressure needed on the turbine to produce the target boost pressure. A well designed turbo system will actually achieve target CFM on a lower intake boost pressure. CFM is the measure, not boost.

I'd sacrifice 10hp for dose every single day of the week.

You can get better flow with the same level of filtration by simply increasing the surface area of the filter. So just get a bigger filter if it's choking up the motor.

Not sucking in hot engine bay air while reducing restrictions on the intake is where it’s at…. Sadly a lot of options only do one of these things.

Standard air filters are made to be used in all harsh conditions including sand storms. They are always restrictive.

There's a solution that doesn't restrict airflow & still has good filtration.

Lookup "engine particle separator".
Basically it has an internal corkscrew shape that forces all incoming air into a cyclone. By doing this the heavier particles in the air (dust) get spun to the outside of the screw, leaving only the air in the center.
You still need a filter, but significantly less particles will even get to the filter.

well if you just increase the surface area with everything else being the same you keep the filtration the same or better (less pressure differential across it equals better filtration if the hole sizes remain the same).

with foam filters remember to oil the filter every now and then OR IT WILL ABSOLUTELY CRUMBLE INTO THE ENGINE.

This intake with the D-Sport ECU is so much fun in a Copen!

My original intake was most definitely a restriction, I’m talk way height making my cold air intake with a k&n pod filter and the difference is tremendous, not only does my car run better, it gets up hills faster, being a na diesel I can use any bit of power I can get

A company from my city made an entire Industry from it. Each year they put on a car show for everyone. When I was a teenager and couldn’t afford to buy an air intake system so they sponsored me and gave me one for free. That company is K&N.

Yep putting at 15l cummins dual element filter on any gas engine = no restriction.

VW 2.5l 5 cyl has a straight up hot air intake from factory. The engine cover is part of ot and there are holes in the bottom to let in hot air. CAI makes a big difference I can't even handle driving my car stock now. It wasn't immendiate either I didn't notice the difference until I put the old intake back on and the ecu had learned the cai.

The HKS intake i put on my K20 does pretty much nothing apart from make the induction noise 1000% better. I'm totally fine with that :D

when I was 17 I believed in my friend when he said you'll get a 10hp gain. so I bought one. I got a straw that sucked in heat and water on a rainy day and nearly ruined my engine. The ram air system worked better. I learned a lot from that mistake.

Had an intake (unsure of brand) on a honda I bought, half throttle or more would give a little whistle so I'd tell people it was a stage 4 intake

It might suck small debris straight to your engine as it won't filter as good

I've had my K&N CAI in my 08 Camry I4 since 2014, that combined with my Megan Racing Catback since 2019, the sound still makes me smile.
