Mazda CX-60 2024 review: D50e GT | Long-term test of new BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV rival

The 2024 Mazda CX-60 is a critical new model for the Japanese brand in Australia, where it's hoping it can go tyre to tyre with premium Mid-size SUV segment heavyweights, including the well-established BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. Needless to say, it has a very tall task ahead of it.

That said, the CX-60 uses a similar formula to its rivals, with a new-for-Mazda rear-wheel-drive platform providing the basis for the model. These underpinnings also unlock a trio of new powertrain options, including petrol and diesel turbocharged inline six-cylinder engines, as well as a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid.

In this expert long-term review, CarsGuide Senior Journalist Richard Berry and his family of four spend three months living with the CX-60's diesel-powered D50e GT variant to find out just how well it measures up against its stiff competition. After all, it literally has to be a class above the popular – but mainstream – CX-5 in all areas.

Why don’t these car reviewers not know you can activate the touch screen when driving in the settings? 😂

My guy the dial is amazing. I have been using it for years. Blind fold me and ask me to get to a menu and i can do it with the feel of the dial. Cant do that with a touchscreen. Your eyes have to see where your tapping. The dial is tactile its like using a tv remote. You dont look at your tv remote when you use it because you know exactly where the buttons are. Now if your tv remote was a touch screen youd always look at it to see what youre touching.

It takes about 4 seconds to shift the shifter after you’ve started the car. oh my God. Start the car, put on your seat belt and your glasses then shift into drive 🤷‍♂️ how hard is it. It’s not that big of a problem 🙄

I own one for 4 months now, drove 11k km already, it is a good car. Not perfect, but perfect for me :) Suspension is a bit stiff, but I don't mind - it must be so for a reason. Transmission shifts well, the engine is amazing (main reason for my choice), I just love the simplicity of the interior (mine is all black) and the exterior design. I wouldn't change a thing and I appreciate Mazda for the work they put in this model.

Well. As someone who owns one of these, I have to disagree with you. The suspension is the only thing that I have the same opinion about. It could be much better. The dial-shift is fantastic and a great idea for safety reasons. My friend, touching a screen while we are driving is not the best thing to operate the systems (BMW was the first brand to use this method). The transmission is fine with my unit, so I'm very pleased with it.

We bought a CX-60, and it has been a terrible experience. We’ve had problems every day. In just six months, we’ve had to bring it in for recalls and software resets five times. The value has already dropped by $10, 000. Please don’t buy the CX-60. My wife spoke to the General Sales Manager, Robert, Mt Gravatt but there was no resolution. He was polite, but nothing was accomplished.

You're criticising touch screen with blue fingernails🤦🏾

I’m surprised how reviewers still don’t know that you can make the display fully touch from the settings!!! Read 😢

If your not allowed to use your phone while driving, then you shouldn't be allowed to touch the screen while driving..

I was hoping this was gonna be deadly, it looks great. Hard disagree on the dial, I have a Mazda 3 and I rate it, so easy to use. I find moving into a car with a touch screen to be a down grade.

Dont understand the hate for this car. Have test driven all 3 engines in GT versions and it's a quality SUV with character, style and a great interior. Much nicer than Rav4, Xtrail, Sorrento etc.

As an owner of the CX-60 PHEV (coming to 1 year soon) - the only issue I have with the vehicle is the comfort when going over bad roads/speed bumps.
For example, I feel like I have to come to a crawl on speed bumps (not just for myself but for my passengers). Like 10km/h crawl. Compared to other cars I have driven which feel like I glide over speed bumps.

It has gotten a lot better since Mazda released their comfort pack (there was an optional recall that was available for users that bought the car Pre September). But the issues still persist. Transmission issues for me have been resolved as well. I did have some lurchness when shifting in the low gears, and when it was switching from Petrol to EV but that's all gone now.

I wish Mazda could have done more to improve that comfort but they haven't.

For the price it's a great car, but you have to really decide is the looks and performance (it drives really nice and is a lot of fun) worth these comfort issues. I believe the Petrol/Diesel versions are probably a lot more comfortable now and might be great choices!

I am very disappointed they did not bring this to the US market.

According to Mazda, Issues have been addressed in builds post September 2023 - prior to that manufacturer date and without the remedial software and suspension upgrade you can experience the gearbox and ride behaviour exhibited here.

As the owner of a top line Mazda cx-60 3.3 petrol I can assure you it's a terrible car, harsh ride, dangerous lane assist, broken technology, driver recognition broken, speed limit detection broken, steamed up windows occasionally, harsh ride, rattling boot lid, lane assist that will kill you if you are not careful, continuous interference in the driving experience by annoying warnings, bleeps and bells. I actually hate this car more than anything else I've ever driven and I've owned other Mazda's too.

I don't agree with your judgement on center commander

It's better to disable touchscreen when driving.

Navigate around using command center requires adjustment. I really enjoy using it.

Touching it is more dangerous than the controller.

It's not that hard to use on the move?

Apparently Mazda have done significant upgrades to the suspension and transmission so you might want to test an upgraded version. Seems both these things are now much improved.
