This is how you tear up the typical recipe for a premium mid-size SUV and instead produce something with fresh and tasty appeal. Mazda Australia has launched the 2023 CX-60 with a new layer of luxury, a brand new inline-six engine family and its first ever plug-in hybrid package.

That’s right, the CX-60 mid-sizer features an inline-six engine. How? It rides on the company’s all-new platform that supports a longitudinal engine configuration. It’s also described as a predominately rear-wheel drive platform that also accommodates all-wheel drive running gear.

Mazda is pitching the CX-60 as a more up-market alternative to the CX-5, but positioned below the CX-9 in terms of size. The lineup is very simple, spanning from the Evolve, GT, and Azami trim levels, and each of these is available with the G40e petrol, D50e diesel, and P50e hybrid package.

Yep, you can get all engines on the base Evolve. That’s a very cool move in our books, because it means special engines are not reserved for bigger spenders. Although, each engine does have a slightly different price tag attached. And a number of option packs can be added on...

Btw the are multiple reasons why straight 6 engines are back.

1- same bore/stroke can be used to make smaller 1.5 liter 3 cylinder turbo.
2- modern straight 6 engine do have cylinders closer to each other, so it makes them shorter that straigh 6 motors been manufactured in the past.
3- for straight 6 you will only need 2 camshafts. Not 4 like for V6 configuration.
4- balance/vibration characteristics are better that any V6.

Was thinking about it, my old 2011 Pulsar ST-S turbo, did 0 to 100 in 7 or so seconds (Manual) they are only 140 or so kw. This would be way heavier, I would have bet a 3.3 litre turbo with electric assist would be way quicker?
Also this being a auto with predominantly rear wheel drive would not have any traction issues?
Has Mazda really held back this cars potential? The converter did not allow any slip on takeoff and seems to bog down with wanting too high a gear.
Maybe a true high performance version will come out, I hope so.

I heard low 8’s and scrambled for my cheque book. But then realised it was 8l per 100km and not 8 sec 1/4 mile.

Thanks for the review. It’s very odd Mazda would have fake engine sounds coming through the speakers. Were you able to confirm this from the specification deck pdf? I think it would be labeled “Engine Harmonics Enhancement”.
