Pretty sure if you had showed that detailed picture of Eta Carinae A to the early astronomers first observing it, their heads would have exploded into a homunculus nebula of their own.

I, too, shat half or more of my mass through winds and catastrophic outbursts.

Not just a supernova, but a hypernova. Hope to see this in my life time.

Any chance of doing a piece on HD 140283, The Methuselah Star, as some physicists put its age at 14.46 ± 0.8, which could make it older than the universe itself?

This is one of favorite things in the sky, along with 47 Tucanae.

You mention they go supernova "soon" after their eruption, but when we're talking about space stuff, "soon" isn't very clear. What are we talking? Years? Decades? Centuries? Millennia? Millions of years?

I think that one of the most amazing things about this whole homunculus star ordeal is the fact that I could see a supernova or even hypernova in my lifetime, which happens to be one of my lifelong dreams.

This helped me with a school paper, thank you! :)

With my luck, I'll be watching to see it go supernova, but will look away for a split second and miss it.

how is there 1 dislike? like who has their thumb so far up their ass that they don't enjoy amazing observations like this? absolutely fascinating

For those interested in actually seeing Eta Carinae, you'll have better luck in the Southern Hemisphere: "Eta Carinae is circumpolar south of latitude 30°S, but is never visible north of latitude 30°N."

Just downloaded the STL, will have my own nebula on a shelf soon.

2:25 Eta Carinae A didn't erupt in the 18 hundreds, it erupted hundreds of years ago. But I guess astronomic community has agreed to dismiss that when talking about astronomical events. It would be rather confusing if you always had to calculate back :)

Maybe you guys could make a video about that!

wiki says its 7500 lightyears away from earth. what would mean everything we see now already happened 7500 years ago at eta carniae itself right?
