How Venice Plans To Save Itself From Sinking

The iconic city of Venice is sinking due to a couple of reasons, some man-made, some natural. But is it possible to save the city from its seemingly doomed fate? Maybe. And today, I'll be telling you how Venice plans to do it.

I just remember during the Covid lockdowns how the water became clear with all kinds of fish and dolphins seen swimming in the canals for the first time in ages. Crazy

The greatest reason infrastructure hasn't been build on time or within budget is not rising costs but terrible, egregious levels of corruption.

Can't wait for future historians to uncover the lost City of venice

Venice began to sink due to the Italian government of the day increasing the opening of the lagoon to the Adriatic in the 1950s.
This and dredging the lagoon to allow tankers to enter and reach the industrial site to the west of the lagoon has caused this issue.
This is a disaster caused by greed, with no thought of culture, history or the people who called Venice home
The Italian Government should be taken to account

Galveston Texas was an island that got hit by the largest hurricane ever recorded and they raised the entire city by many feet and built a giant seawall

I live in Florence Italy. But I visited Venice in 2019 November. I was there just for 4/5 hours, only visited san marco area which is a famous tourist spot. When we were about to return it started to rain. The next morning I was in Florence. I saw the news that the place I visited the day before was in knee-deep water due to rain. The whole city was underwater. I was like thank God I got to visit the place without any problem.

I visited Venice in 1989. We were told then it would be underwater in 10 years.
That was over 30 years ago,

as a venetian ( a person who live in venice) we know that our city is very fragile but we managed to create a sistem that would block or atleast mitigate the entrance of water during "acqua alta" in italian or floods. wer have our metods to know when the floods is coming: its based on the wind and it might be floods if it is "sirocco" we also have sirens and based on how many times it sing you get the level: 1 siren low 2 medium 3 average 4 above average but it not cause major issue and 5 is high like 1.60 and above. 3 years ago before covid the biggest flood since the 80' ( im not sure about the year but it know that this one was the 2nd bigger floods ever recorded) basically i had a friend that would go around on his boat on the pedestrian part " fondamenta". Most of the shops lost everything that was at the street level. btw venetian ahs personal protection against this for example you can put a slate of steel if the water is low like it arrives at your ankle or a bit above but it lets you get in and out whithout being bstacled by it. you can wear a simil boots pant which covered your lower body till your torso.
i'm seeing a lot of comment saying that the "mose" has took too long to be built anda lot of people took avantage of it making a lot of money which is true but in the end it kinda works so... meh?

in the end we are doomed to extinct becasue people are leaving the city for better jobs om the land and the venetian government doesn't really care about creating new jobs and opportunes for its citizen, i really love this city i've lived there since i was born but the lack of opportunites for the youth so if the young people leave the rest of the city si destinated to end bc there is no one coming next.

and yes after the lockdown a lot of animals arrived but i heard that someone killed the ducks near the station with pesticide which is disgusting bc like wtf bro they are ducks ??? personally i had never seen dolphin but there ares some video about it maybe its in another "sestiere" the city is devided on setieri like as a venetian you evaluate yours and some local gangs decide to stab eachother to control nothing but yes we are very territorial and also extrimily racist towards non-venetian citizen like if you are a tourisrt you are welcome but if you come from the countryside you will get called "terrone" which mean someone who came from the fields its like callng someone black the n word so its better not say it. its really derogatory towards countyside homies.

Been there in 2010, and already flooded a little at the main square in winter. Kinda shocked me as it's supposed to be popular tourist spot, but then again it's a floating city, what did I expect? I didn't realise back then in 2010, how serious Venice's situation would be as of now, years later. Wish all the best for all the sinking cities (wait, we're ALL sinking 😂).

Various solutions that come to mind to save Venice:

1) Construction of concrete, waterproof pontoons using underwater mining techniques under buildings sitting on petrified wood foundations in Venice.
This is a radical solution.
The higher the sea levels rise due to global warming, the higher Venice will rise with this measure.
However, in this option, the buildings will be disconnected from the foundation and their originality will be partially damaged in this way.

2) Gradually raising the ground by injecting concrete under buildings and under petrified trees in Venice.
For this process, it is possible to inject not only concrete but also deeper water.
In this way, there will be an opportunity to temporarily save time.
And since the buildings are not disconnected from the foundation, there will be no problem of originality.

3) The rise in sea level will be monitored, and the flooded ground floors will be abandoned to the sea, and Venice will be used for accommodation until the 1st and, in time, the 2nd floors are also flooded.
Perhaps, 30-40 years later, all of Venice will be under water and Venice will now be an underwater historical asset, limited to diving tourism, to watching from the surface with boats suitable for sub-pancakes.
While Venice gradually disappears under water over time, an imitation Venice built on concrete pontoons can be built in the lagoon, similar to the first option suitable for the Venice concept.
And in this way, the Venetian spirit is somehow kept alive.

In the final analysis, I am absolutely certain of that.
Venice will be largely submerged before the end of the century.
Historical buildings and everything in them will be destroyed due to the damage of salt water.
If no recovery work is done.

I am in favor of the first solution that is difficult, expensive and requires technological innovations.
I want Venice to be a floating city that will exist for centuries to come, and most importantly, a living city.

Thank you for this extremely wonderful video.. ❤️ I love the " Citt'a di Veniza " I go to my Italian lessons in the City and walk through this City every day... off the beaten track from the tourist and I get very emotional thinking that this City can sink.

Wait, so a tiny church takes over a million stakes, yet the entire city sits on top of just over 10 million stakes.either they went overkill on stakes for the church or whoever calculated all the stakes used was heavily intoxicated.also vid says city sinks 0.4 inch a year and then later in vid says it sinks over a inch a century.again terrible maths, if the city sinking 0.4 inch a year, it certainly sinking more than a inch each century
