Why was Venice, Italy built on water?

Venice (Italy) is one of the most amazing cities in the world. But how did it get there? Why would anyone want to live in a city that can't be accessed by land, and who had to build their houses out over the water? Well, as you'll see from this video, there's a really good reason why they made Venice out of water.

People have been building settlements in the most awkward of places since the dawn of time. I'm pretty sure we will keep doing so forever.

I think it’s interesting to say that the wood they used “happened” to be water resistant. I believe it’s totally possible and even likely that they knew and made this move on purpose. Awesome video, thanks!

"too build a city where it is impossible to build a city is madness in itself, but to build there one of the most elegant & grandest cities is the madness of genius"

I was in Venice when I was ten. It was every bit as impressive as described. It breaks my heart to see it knee deep in water now.

Building a city on wooden stilts in the middle of a swamp; now that's some grueling work.

Is no one gonna talk about how Venice was literally led by a Doge? Lol

Ah Venice... The city of water that became a favorite of mine solely because of an animated pokemon movie from back in the day that featured a pair of lovely Dragons and a gemstone that held the water in place. I've been fascinated by the city ever since.

Engineering and architecture back in the day is a genius because they can build something so strong that can last for forever even if it sunk into the water.... Today all things have been built in wood, cement, metal, etc... But it's not as solid as it was like the structures have been made back then...

I remember watching a short doc about Venice where they were exploring various basements and ground floor levels showing how, over the years, the "ground floor" of the building were being built upon to raise up the floor level. While I'm not sure if it still holds true today, in the doc the mentioned how the raising of the floors has fallen out of practice in favor of other methods. On one hand I can see how basically making the floors thicker could help in the short term but by the same token you're just adding more and more weight on very old foundations. Certainly not an easy problem to solve no matter which angle you attack it from.
