A bad fuel pump can cause a Crank No Start condition and its very important you know exactly and correctly how to diagnose a failure of the pump. Otherwise you a misdiagnosis will cause you to mistake a bad fuel pump for a wiring or ignition issue and send you in the wrong direction.

This might be the best tutorial I have seen on YT. Truly excellent.

This is one of the best videos I've seen for troubleshooting the fuel pump and the pressure not everybody can afford all the pressure test and not every car comes with a tester valve

Good video - remember, the fuel pump will not continue to run with key ON and engine not running without a jumper in place. It's a safety feature so grandma will not burn up after she causes a 20 car pipe-up and does not turn key to OFF position when she is done.

Nice one! and my cheap obd2 reader connected to the torque pro app will give you fuel pressure values at the rail, well it does on mine, for quick direction👍

Thanks!! I've 12.75 volts at the pump, 4 amps going through, 20 PSI of pressure (supposed to be 70 PSI), no start. So what I take away from your video is I have to keep looking (fuel pump is NOT my issue here).

A code tester can operate the pump and give codes if it don't work. If you get codes about fuel pump circuit, it could be the relay if the pump don't work. Try the solenoid and relay test. Fuel pumps can operate intermittently. A partially clogged tank filter can cause low fuel pressure. If the pressure leaks down, it could be the pump, injector, or pressure regulator. The live test on a code tester can show fuel pump pressure while cruising at highway speeds to see if it's low.

Got a 99 Camry. Haven’t started in 3 weeks during this pandemic. Went to start it i turned over then died instantly and all it does is crank. Fingers crossed it’s only just the fuel pump/ relay and timing belt didn’t slip.

Good Day,

I’m a stay-at-home Dad on disability (got run down by a
Postal Truck on my motorcycle) and I was hoping you could advise me. My 1996
Oldsmobile Aurora
won’t start and it’s definitely fuel-related. It turns over fine, but it “coughs”
when I pump the accelerator. The fuel pump is NOT engaging when I turn the
ignition to on (I would normally hear it), but I want to be sure it’s not a
clogged fuel filter, open fuse or a relay etc. before spending hundreds I can
ill-afford on a pump I don’t need. This began when I accidentally ran out of
gas last week, my fuel gauge was not working. I’m betting sediment from the
tank got sucked into the lines, fuel filter or injectors. My car has been
running fine until I tried to start it yesterday. I assumed I ran out of gas,
got 2 gallons in a can but it still won’t run. How can I eliminate the other
things to find it is a bad pump?

Thank you so much

If I disconnect the fuel line at the rail, and after taking precautions, crank the engine, shouldn't I see fuel coming out of the line?  Would this indicate a good or bad pump?  Thanks for your video!
