I write in four related genres. Sci-fi, epic fantasy, urban fantasy, and a sort or paranormal/romantic/witch fantasy :) I write what I want to read, knowing that my sci-fi pays the bills. I do it anyway, because I want to. I enjoy it, and feel it keeps me and my ideas fresh. I don't want to "churn out" books at break-neck pace as seems to be the watchword now. I would be happy with one or two books a year--still working on that.

I don't chase trends. I advertise when the mood strikes. I write full-time, because like Michael, I had an epiphany. My parents passed away and a year or so after my Dad passed my company down-sized. I had the opportunity to apply for another position within the company or take a golden handshake and say good-bye. I looked at my life and writing hobby, and said to myself, "I don't want to die wondering what I could have been. I want to take a chance once in my life and know I tried."

So I did, and I now make a full time living, earning double my best ever income.

Why do I write, when I could retire now? Because I want to is the answer. Why don't I chase the latest trend or genre? Because I don't read those, and wouldn't enjoy it. I do what I want, write what I want when I want, and consider time the only currency worth anything these days.

Don't waste your time doing things that do NOT make you happy.

Great advice, and I agree 100%! I write predominantly in science fiction and fantasy. But I have also done contemporary drama and poetry. I look to add general fiction thrillers (thrillers with no speculative fiction elements. I've incorporated the thriller aspect into my sci-fi and fantasy quite a bit), historical fiction, mystery, and nonfiction (Bible studies) to the mix as well. I also like to write for middle grade and YA as well as for adults. I've also drafted some things that could be made into picture books for kids about my cats' adventures.

I'm bouncing between (threw more like two), a post apocalypse setting and a epic dystopian world. The third one is yet to be determined do to it's ... unique nature. But honestly I like every type of story (except romance) that I want to try and write at least one in every single one.

Abrupt ending on this one ;)

Good advice - and I think you're right, although, I think it'll be a longer road to success if you mix too many genres. If you think of Stephen King or Agatha Christie, you'll get an association to their books and style of writing and storytelling right away. When you muddle that up, it gets harder. But of course it can be done. It'll probably just take a while longer to get to where you want to be. But as long as your storytelling is good, and you're aware of the risk, it's all good.
