You instructional videos and tips are awesome, as a ife long competitive swimmer i am often trying to help other people improve their stroke and swimming efficiency - for many non-swimmer the aspect of engaging your core properly is one that a lot of people struggle with.

Great info! Just to add, besides squats I think twisting variations in the transverse plane are helpful in the development of core rotation in swimming.

Very good tip but as usual with these kind of things, very easy to spot what you're doing wrong and then very hard to actual do it right and change it.

Rolling the body during front crawl does in my experience require a good kick technique (I usually use fins) to supplement the slower arm stroke. The roll allows a long and strong arm stroke delving deep into the water which utilises the body muscles much more than when swimming more traditionally with little role which places greater stress on the shoulder joints and muscles. Rolling can produce a more relaxed stroke with benefits for casual or longer distance swimming, but whether the kick can be maintained or the stroke undertaken without a kick, I do not know.

Most of my power comes from my lower body, where as I need to try and even it with my upper body. I hope this helps me, thanks!

Very helpful... I am a beginner having problems with neck / back pain and I feel like I am the typical case at 2:06. Just feel like I'm putting a lot of strain in that area and trying to "muscle my way through". I'm hitting the pool today, I will be mindful of engaging the core and being upright relaxed. Thanks!

Great video Brenton, thank you. I wish to offer a thought: The issue with engaging your core as a blanket term is firstly we need to define what the core muscles are? Which core muscles exactly do we engage? The core muscles include the: TVA, multifidus, diaphragm, pelvic basin and other deeper muscles. To a swimmer with no experience of Pilates or core conditioning training, this may be confusing. As a strength coach who works with triathletes, many of them find it confusing. My point is: One cannot engage the core correctly if they don’t know how. My guess is, if a person undertakes a core conditioning program, they will have a better awareness of how to actively engage it while swimming. i.e. Unconscious Incompetence - Unconscious Competence
