This is kind of like the egg study. Do people who consume more eggs generally consume just the eggs? No they often consume pancakes, bacon, syrup etc. Kind of makes it hard to do studies like this.

I want you to know. I repeat what you say in your videos to my coworkers so they all think I'm a nutrition expert.

You need to do a daily diet vid Layne. Even if it's different day to day I'm sure people would like to see it

I think a lot of people forget that everyone’s bodies are different, even studies can have alternate outcomes based on the different types of people. I think it’s good for people to be open to experimenting with new foods and just do what makes you feel best while doing yearly bloodwork to make sure all your markers look good. Sticking with minimally processed Whole Foods, not overeating, getting sleep. Willing to bet you will live a pretty healthy life. Don’t overthink it.

Great to hear someone promote the benefit of eating fruit + veg

I am so glad you explain the difference between relative risk an absolute risk. More people need to know the difference when they read the studies.

The difference between relative risk and absolute risk is huge, but frequently either overlooked or ignored in pursuit of an agenda.

Coming from pharmaco epi, it nice to hear you educate people on methods and biostats. I feel the more people know this they better we can discuss studies as opposed to tossing out the paper headline findings stats on social media. I have tried many eating methods and tried to keep up with literature etc and keep coming back to the same place: High protein, high fiber (fruit/veg), stay active/explosive..sleep well. For the algo!=)

Great balanced commentary. Sadly lacking in the world these days. Well done Layne.

Finally a study that addressed healthy user bias. Now I understand that isn't exactly what they did, but by studying unprocessed red meat they kinda did. Just studying Americans v Italians red meat consumption really doesn't help fitness enthusiasts. The average American is getting red meat from fast food and the like, so that goes along with the consumption of other unhealthy things.

Also keep in mind that with medicine, statistical significance does not necessarily equate clinical significance. My point is your medical provider may not use this evidence to guide their practice until they see more studies with similar results and guidelines that translate how to implement the evidence into medical practice. My point is don't make your medical provider the devil if they haven't seen this study or changed their practice based on one study. I did really enjoy your balanced take on this Layne. I like that you discussed the risk seems to be low IF other variables are controlled such as smoking, fruits and vegetables, and exercise. One thing we do know is that meat in general is full of free radicals which are carcinogenic and do increase CVD risk and cancer risk due to increase oxidative stress. Smoking basically destroys everything in the body, but notably it also increases free radicals and causes oxidative stress. Fruits and vegetables on the other hand are full of ANTIOXIDANTS that help get rid of free radicals. So this is why a balanced diet that includes fruits and vegetables is important. Of course this isn't including all of the other essentials that are provided by fruits and vegetables. This is just one of the major hallmark points as to why medical providers preach eating fruits and vegetables and decreasing red meat consumption. Because like you said most patients replace their fruits and vegetables with more red meat. I really enjoyed your balanced take on this data.

comment for the algorithm...I heard about you through Mind Pump over a year ago. But it wasnt until now that I finally checked your channel out. And I deeply regret waiting so long. Love this channel. Now I have a Dr I trust that I can reference against my sister and the rest of the world in arguments. Shes one of those that loves eating meat, eating grass fed stuff, avoids plants, and thinks seed oils are the devil.

Appreciate the info and analysis you provide, thanks!

A bit confused on one detail, though. At about 5:00 you say they didn't control for fibre and fruit/veg consumption, but at 2:50 the displayed text seems to say they did? What have I missed?

question for Layne, in the fibre studies did they do straight swaps of simple carbs with fibre/high fiber containing foods? maybe a lack of simple carbs/processed carbs brought about the benefits of fibre

I agree with you Layne but you need to understand that some ppl on the carnivore diet cannot tolerate fruits and veges. Many can im sure but not all. I was one who could not for some time. After the birth of my firstborn I developed an autoimmune disease and reacted to fruits and vegetables. I went on carnivore and my symptoms disappeared. I tried to reintroduce the fibrous foods and I reacted. Thankfully I am able to eat fibrous foods now after a trip to Bali. (i think the sunshine/vitamin D fixed me). But you have to understand that high fibre isn't possible for some ppl.

Very sensible in saying red meat is OK as long as you get fruit, vegetables and fiber in your diet. A balanced and research-based view, so I have subscribed. Thanks.
