Is chicken really better than red meat for cholesterol levels?

Something we have been told for decades about our food may be wrong. A study out seems to suggest white meat, including poultry, may not be so healthy after all. It could affect your blood cholesterol level the same way as red meat. Dr. Tara Narula explains.

Like my doctor likes to say. "Everything that you put in your mouth kills you". Every time you look at health news there is some research that comes up with the opposite conclusions of the last one. Trying to figure out what you should and shouldn't eat will drive you crazy. Most of the recent research points the LDL finger at simple carbs in any case. Don't smoke. Don't drink alcohol to excess. Eat whole foods most of the time and genetics will most likely do the rest.

This commentary is much better than much of the reporting on this important study. Dr. Narula correctly points out that LDL cholesterol might not be the main cause linking red meat consumption to cardiovascular events. She does not address the LDL particle size issue, however. The study found that red meat, white meat, and vegetable protein all had the same effect on small and medium particle LDL, which is thought to be the LDL that causes heart attacks.

This is the most ridiculously flawed study I've seen in a while. Firstly, roughly 100 people isn't sufficiently enough, if it is composed of multiple ages ranging from 26 to 65. Secondly, it also doesn't look at activity level, which has a huge impact on cholesterol level - those with higher activity level will have lower impact on cholesterol so the results would get skewed. Thirdly, 4 weeks of diet is nearly not enough time for raising the cholesterol level significantly, so there could be much noise in the data simply because sufficient time was given for a proper stabilization of cholesterol level. It seems to me that this study was designed exactly so that red and white meats would appear the same. This study is not important for a white/red meat comparison - stop paying attention to it from that perspective. However, the plan vs meat may still be statistically significant, but need better resolution of the data for proper conclusion.
