I just started welding school and its good that I found this video at a proper time, you just opened my eyes and made realize that the more I squeeze out of welding school the better it would be for me out there in the field. Thanks for the video!

I have been teaching over 25 years and you are dead on target. Teaching students how to stand to SEE their weld and not try to look through their hands or being in the fume plume is critical. And you are so right, students come in all shapes and sizes, left-handed or right-handed. Fortunately after I graduated welding school you have times that it is virtually impossible to weld with your dominant hand and the best welders I know become ambidextrous (can weld with either hand).
Keep the outstanding videos coming!

Great advice. I did exactly that for the first 3 years of my apprenticeship. Each year while in school, I would ask questions. When the questions I had that didn't make sense during class, and was afraid to speak out loud, I would save for lunch, track down the applicable teacher and ask for one on one help to clarify the question in order to formulate the answer. It was a useful tool, that fortunately I only had to employ once. However there is usually some very dedicated educators out there, and appreciate when their students need help.
The only bad or crazy question, is the question you fail, or are too afraid to ask because of embarrassment
Ask, and keep on asking throughout your career. Never let anybody tell you different

First one is so true. Sometimes we are nervous of what people think or want to impress or we want to know it all. Just be honest and the more questions you ask the better. No stupid questions. You are paying to learn, get your moneys worth! And they only get better from there.

a good tip while in school is to see if you can get a small project put together.

something like a tractor scoop. anything that makes you do something other than simple T welds on a workbench.

ive mostly only done simple welds in my booth thus far and last night I was given the opportunity to work on a tractor scoop, welding a 2 meter (~6 feet) bar of steel into the back bottom of a tractor scoop and it was quite the learning experience.

it was uncomfortable, difficult to position myself in order to properly guide the MIG (MAG specifically, MISON22 gas, argon with 22% Co2 mix and SF-3AM spool) gun, but I learned a lot and got some tips and tricks from the instructors!

I made a nice mess of it, but I'm learning! it didn't turn out too too bad, but I ended up making a decent amount of work in order to take it from looking just meh to alright to excellent!

Mine was mainly my own stupidity. Entitlement thinking I deserved 25$ an hour starting out.. 15years ago. Then I got a stick plate cert 1st.. I'm terrified of heights so that was a waste and no one asked I was clueless. Spent 10years at different jobs got into hydronics welding pipe, fell in love went back to school on 1st lay off from weather and now have few years under belt doing that maintaining my pipe cert and want to start my own business mainly as a sub contractor but point is research what your wanting to do and if you can physically handle it. Great video keep em coming

Thanks for the advice, i’m a beginner just now trying to get into things. Going into welding school once I graduate High school. I just want to learn as much as I can so I can go in prepared and ready to learn. I have a hard time when it comes to mistakes and this just solidifies the fact that I need to make mistakes to learn. Thank you. Have a great day!!

I’m thinking about doing welding myself I have some experience with my pops and I like hands on work so I feel like this would be good for me plus I just want enough money where I’m comfortable to have a nice home, family, and be able to enjoy life at the same time

Thank you so much for answering most of my questions about what to expect on day one of welding school. I am applying to Lincoln Tech. I have looked through the course description but am having difficulty deciphering between, Welding and Metal Fabrication Technology vs. Welding Technology. It seems that both classes have the same 4 types of welding. ie. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Gas Welding (GTAW/TIG).

I know very little about welding but I’m about to go to community college for welding. I love having these videos at my disposal, but If anyone has any extra tips I would love to hear them.

Welderbeast you are so right on learning about welding, I started my apprenticeship in 1970 (I know I’m old ), but I learn all the time when I’m doing jobs or setting up . Great video, keep them coming 👍. Terry

Measure twice cut once. Do it right the first time. The last thing you want to do is take it apart and redo it. Even worse to waste materials. Take pride in your work make it last.

I start welding school tomorrow, always loved welding and blacksmithing and it’s 8 seasons each one being on a Sunday and the rest of the week I will be in special effects for the walking dead so only time I can practice is sundays.

Right now in special effects I am not welding but when I get my certification it’s a much better pay and I will be using a trade skill.

It is 1:24 am and I am trying to find some videos before I leave at 5 am but also I am nervous because all is happening is very rushed and so thanks for the video I just hope I know the paperwork part because I can’t do that stuff well.
