Have you made any of these mistakes? I certainly have, especially in the early days!

I’ve made the wrong substrate and too much water mistakes. Thank goodness my terrarium was small. When it failed, I decided to do more research before I created another one. Your videos have helped me so much. I’m not ready yet, but I will be soon. Thank you 💚

One of my friends keeps making these and I got inspired, now I'm really getting into this. The vibe I get from terrarium videos is just so nice, I could keep watching this stuff all night

AS always, thanks for sharing this!! I live in a tropical country (costa rica), and I´ve been making terrariums for a year and a half, and I have noticed the heat in my terrariums, so I try to open them regularly. I´ve been doing my research, reading and watching videos of terrarium making, but I think the best is combine all that info with your own observations, and taking notice from the environment where you live. Here we have only summer and winter, so the changes in temperatures or humidity are gentle. All plants that I use, ferns, or begonias are from my own nurseries, and my mosses are collected from the street, or from people that ripped them of from their houses (there are no shops here where u can find mosses) or my own small backyard. I think observation is key to comprehend how and why your terrariums behaves in certain way...

I’ve made every mistake mentioned, unfortunately, over and over again. At least until now. I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating- thank you so much for your videos! I love terrariums and have strived for a while now to make them the enjoyable, relaxing and mind nourishing experience most others have, however, until I found your channel my experiences were a frustrating cycle of building (with noticeable apprehension of failure), satisfaction and enjoyment for a few days/weeks, then the sickening acknowledgment of realizing I’d failed yet again. So the fact that you not only list the mistakes, but also offer solutions goes a long way in ensuring I won’t continue this cycle going forward. The only thing I’d add and probably the biggest thing I’m guilty of is rushing the whole process. Not only have I wanted to complete an entire build in one setting, which might not be difficult for some setups and/or a more experienced builder, I often chose to build more complicated terrariums and not always with all the correct components. As common sense as that is not to do, I found myself struggling with it every time. After watching several of your videos, I’ve finally learned that this can’t be a relaxing, mind nourishing hobby if I choose to start at levels too involved for my experience and/or without everything needed to do so correctly from the beginning. It only served to set myself up for frustration and failure and that obviously negates my whole purpose for getting into terrariums. I can’t tell you how appreciative I am that you were able to change my mindset.

Hi Ben. I built my first terrarium using a 10 gallon carboy. I have a drainage layer and a coir substrate and have planted a variety of plants with a few wooden sticks out of the garden to add a woodland look. I also built a cork stopper housing several hidden features which are connected to a microcontroller in a small box:- a humidity detector which flashes a red led if the humidity is higher than 80% and flashes at a faster rate if it falls below 70% indicating the need for water; an ambient light detector which turns on three white led’s when the ambient light falls below a certain level; I’ve also fitted a discrete plastic tube which is connected to an aquarium air pump, the pump is turned on when the humidity rises above 80% allowing the stale moist air to be slowly replaced by drier fresh air.
So far the plants seem to be thriving and I can see some roots protruding into the substrate. Do you think I’m on the right lines?

Sadly I’ve accomplished each and every one of these mistakes. Okay, now that that’s done- time to try again! I appreciate your calm delivery and the fact that you resemble Heath Ledger!

Thank you. I’m attempting my first few slightly larger terrariums with some aquariums I had lying around, coming from mainly aquascaping. Hopefully I’ll be able to maintain a good mini ecosystem.

Hi Ben, thanks for the video, I am here in Johannesburg SA, just starting out with this fascinating hobby, I am not a plant guy, I built my first sealed terrarium in a small tomato jam jar, about 3 weeks ago, so far its still ok, but it was just a trial. Put in a small cactus and some moss from between my outside wall, been adding 4 to 6 drops of water after first 10 days, the small piece of fern I added did not take. I saw some nice glass jars at our local Checkers store the other day, so am gearing up for my next project, this art seems to be quite new here in SA, or maybe its just me. Anyways many thanks for the video and pointers. I'll let you know how the project goes...

3:54 - I was literally going to do just this based on other videos that I've watched. In fact, those other vicdeos look pretty clownish compared to your sound advice on soil and making terrariums! Thanks so much! New sub!

Very informative and reassuring. I live in the US desert southwest and am interested in starting a moss terrarium in my home. I want to get the most information before beginning. Looking forward to checking out your other videos. My favorite part of this video? Your voice is super soothing!

Thank you for all your helpful videos! I'm preparing to create my first terrarium and want to use moss. I'm enjoying learning from you and hope my first attempt will be successful as I've been given such great advice!

The watering is such an important thing, I am just starting out as I am more fascinated by terrariums than by pot plants 😅
Are the lights very expensive? Both to buy and to run? What light can you use for a small terrarium?
Thanks Ben ☺️
