A few weeks back, my Daily Driver started behaving strangely. And it did not become better. So I decided to set up a new Daily Driver, and I had to do some hard analysis and decisions.

Very interesting idea of going with Ubuntu Server and then adding what you need for Desktop use! I like it!

I used to be on Fedora for quite a few years, but after the debacle with Red Hat pulling the plug on CentOS and then disabling the public git access to the Red Hat sources, I felt dirty even using Fedora. For me it went back to Debian Stable, with quite a few Flatpaks to get some up-to-date packages like Steam, Firefox, etc.

With Debian I miss the fresher components, especially when it comes to Mesa and the general graphics stack, because I am a gamer in my free time. So I do have a feeling I might be going back to Fedora (or maybe Nobara? It's still 99, 99% Fedora, but it's not called "Fedora"). Fingers crossed that some more libraries make it to Debian Backports, then I'd be truly happy!

Decisions for me were made mostly based on ideals. Seeing how the "open" Fedora is *ruled* by Red Hat, and how they have lost their way, really hurt to watch. So back to community-built distros for me!

I run linux mint as my daily driver and it has been years working great for me.

Wow, this is exactly what I went through recently 😃 I tried openSUSE Tumbleweed Slowroll but ended up with Linux Mint Debian Ed (Cinnamon, no Ubuntu) on a secondary laptop and MX Linux (KDE) on primary. I don't want rolling, prefer stability and predictability.

At least you didn't go with Windows!

yes please show us how you did this! I would like to do the same. I believe I have very similar requirements.

Ubuntu server sounds like a nice (if dirty) rational approach. I myself have been jumping between Arch and Debian (and a little mx linux) for the last few years - but kind of falling in love with NixOS currently - maybe in terms of stability, NixOS could be another option to consider?

I didn’t have this decision to make for my daily driver, but for my home server - I love arch, but my wife prefers stability. I ended up with Ubuntu server, and am now running my VMs and containers under LXC - so smooth, repeatable, stable 😢 😂

What about immutable options like Opensuse's Aeon and Kalpa? Or Fedora Silverblue? Vanilla OS? I wouldn't use them myself and I don't know how they work with OBS, but just curious if you looked at them. They're supposed to just work in a relatively low maintenance fashion.

Hahahaha, really nice vid. I had the same feeling when I tried Kubuntu (normally I'm on Arch or Debian Testing or OpenSuse etc.) . But I have to (and did) admit it is a very good KDE spin. It's not so difficult to disable all snaps and enable flatpaks. There is a reason why they are still the biggest distro out there and it is not just for beginners (misconception). Interesting setup, I guess the vanilla Gnome set up is similar to a command line install on Debian? Just choose the package set you like and you get only that. For me an alternative to Debian Testing. Thanks for the insight!

I danced around fedora, debian unstable, then i landed back on arch.
Arch in my view is the easiest to use. But my next fav would be debian. Im not a fan of ubuntu, so if im goind to install something from scratch, id prefer arch because the package manager for me is easier to use. But nice video.

Unfortunately as a gamer I haven't found any linux distro to replace my windows 11 installation. Minecraft just seems to lock up my system with 100% ram usage and i always have problems with how audio behaves in my preferred browser Firefox. Windows although the telemetry just seems the most stable OS for me.

Ubuntu... you should feel dirty! 😜 At the moment I'm daily driving Garuda Gnome. Arch with a vanilla gnome desktop with automatic btrfs snapshots.

As a non obs user i can't relate to most of you problems but i had a good laugh listening to your reasoning nevertheless.

Interesting approach but I have a naive question. Would replacing Ubuntu server with Debian server not worked ?

I would have understood his discomfort if he went to Microsoft or something.
Why was the video on my list?
