You can keep using the borrow army too! It's super effective as you have a 10 turn buffer with them, if I waited 2 turns I could've confederated without a threaten!

Player: could I borrow your 20 stack army for a strategic attack?
Ally: sure.
Player: confederate, or I attack with this 20 stack army!
Ally: oh no, they have a 20 stack army.

Me strength rank 1: join my confederation

Them strength rank 250: No! I don't think you're strong enough even though we dont have any armies and your right next to my last settlement.

Thought I was crazy, but I swore borrowing army as Miao Ying was making it easier to threaten confed Zhao. It's nice to have these little tools it's just a shame Military allies have a chronic habit of dragging you into wars against your friends.

They really should add some technology and/or buildings to ease confederation in civilised faction. It's so frustrating, even more for certain safe faction, to try to confederate them.
Tyrion with half Ulthuan and 6 armies by turn 50 is ridiculous for exemple.

Another tip for those having a hard time with confederation:

You can recruit lords and add RoRs into your armies to temporary bolster your strength too! I once recruited 25 lords and used half of my RoR reserve to squeeze out the last ~3 or so relationship so I don't need to lose the reliability by threatening (interestingly enough it's an Imrik campaign as well)

I wish we could trade multiple settlements at once. Like offer the AI 5 minor settlements in return for one of their major ones. I got a province where I own all the minor settlements and would have loved to trade for the major

CA should give us back the diplomat characters from the old games, and let us send them to our allies to "influence them" with like improving opinion, events for bribing corrupt officials, etc etc.

first time I see threaten actually works XD

The threaten has never worked for me it always counts as declaring war

I agree, that particular mechanic would need a solution for all races. Bestmani has already solved it since DLC Silence and Fury. The chaos dwarves have the confederates on top of their supertower and the normal dwarves added it recently. Norsca and the Greenskins (at least in TWW2) dealt with it by defeating the chief (faction leader). The Human Realms are pretty spread out in the trio (aside from their main rivals in Kislev) and the Skaven would need something like a Council of Thirteen, best accessed through that building in Skavenblight (much like the Wood Elves do with their Great Oak).

I'm late in my Volkmar campaign, i own half of lustria, most of the old world and the desert, i just revived Boris Todbringer by causing a revolt in Middenheim, I let them capture the city and despite the strength difference, I still can't confederate him despite having confederated Gelt, Franz and Wulfhart relatively easily

bro is that what a diplomacy playthrough looks like? It's beautiful.

that's also a pretty desperate, though extremely witty move. Absolutely worth it to own all of Ulthuan

You can also exchange a settlement to join confed or vassalize. That is how I make khorne and clan mors be my vassals as Kairos.

This week I got a confederation opportunity at -1.0. I save-scummed to try various different approaches (without threatening - couldn't afford the reliability hit), and no matter what I did, within two turns it was at least -44.0. Tried borrowing armies, making and breaking agreements, joining wars, giving money, giving and buying settlements, recruiting and disbanding armies, everything I could think of... didn't make any difference. The game gives you no clues (in fact, it lies). So frustrating.

Playing as Tyrion, I have all but Alarielle and have -0.2 to confederate, so freaking close.
Also -100 baseline with Alith Anar, so yeah hard to confederate those two

Thanks for this borrow army tip. Even with over 1k hours in the game I hadn't thought of doing that to help my Confeds.

have a small army with high damage vortex spell wizard or good AOE Artillery stalk their big army and yep you know how to "reduce" their army strength.

I genuinely find confederation to be pretty overrated. If you’re playing higher difficulties having an ally that isn’t completely over encumbered by financial penalties due to difficulty, protecting one of the sides of your empire to be massively beneficial. Just don’t make them a stupid military ally, stick with defensive alliances. Nothing like getting dragged into a war that seems inconsequential only to find out that the other power house nearby is best mates with them and your diplomacy goes down the toilet with them due to war and military actions.
