Noticing an animation trend with the Soul Gems when they are "getting dark"/about to go witch.

There's always absolute darkness with a light sourcing "bouncing or running around" inside the Gem right as it's Magical Girl is expressing pain, before all of it "forces" itself way out according to how the Witch will take form (such as forcing Madoka to point her's to the sky), and the Grief Seed is left behind in the process.

Possibly, that means the Gem is actually a Metaphysical prison for the Soul of the MG, and when that Prison starts collapsing, the Soul looks for a way out... but in vain. The Collapse destroyes the Soul, causing it's energy to spread out, and be "reborn" according to it's current "DNA", leading to how the Witch will be. The impact of the type of death determines how quickly this happens.
