Can we talk about this Madoka’s mental strength for a sec.

Within minutes she found out that the friendly being she trusted her faith on tricked her, found out her sole purpose is being a power generator, watched her best friend become a monster and die a horrible death, watched her role model snap and kill another friend of hers and had to kill her role model herself to prevent the death of the only teammate left, who happens to be the nonsense babbling oddball who turns out was right all along and whose words could have prevented all of this mess had they all listened to her from the beginning.

The fact she didn’t just transform here says a lot about her.

It's terrifying to see that Mami, while surrendering to insanity, still has a tactical mind. The first thing she does is render Homura, the one person that can outpace her, immobile. Following this, she shot Kyoko immediately, because she was the one magical girl of the group clearly willing to murder another human being if it means she survives. Her only flaw was dismissing Madoka as a threat on the likely assumption that she would either be unwilling to kill Mami, or too shocked to move fast enough.

Madoka's Seiryuu really hit the mark on how much agony she's going through.
Best friend turned into a witch and died, one of her friends goes and murders another one of her friends right in front of her, she has to murder one of her friends herself, all after she learned the cost of becoming a magical girl... 
And she's only 14...

Mami has her soul literally shattered, and then still pulls the trigger. She missed, but goddamn, she still tried to take the shot. I hope I can one day be half the bad ass Mami is.

It's worth noting that, even when losing her mind, Mami demonstrates why she was a good leader.

She snapped, but was still thinking ahead.

They can't become witches, so they have to die. Obviously, they won't just stand there and let her kill them all, so in a second she works out the most solid strategy; target the most aggressive teammate first (Kyoko), but only after disabling the one teammate who can easily stop her (Homura).

She thought it all through. in a matter of seconds. And if Madoka weren't so much more confident in that timeline, Mami would have killed them all.

Intense stuff.

Madoka and Mami's seiyuus were really powerful during this scene.

Yukihiro Miyamoto's quote is "I like Mami's calm judgment. Firstly, she binds Homura who has the ability to manipulate time. Subsequently, she kills Kyoko who has the powerful offensive power. Mami's only miscalculation is that Madoka's mind is stronger than she assumed."

Even when being crazed with despair, Mami was still trying to help her friends out by preventing them from becoming Witches. It was sad to see Mami like Damn

This really marks when Madoka became the sole focus.
Sayaka seemed to exist only to die and break Madoka's heart, Kyoko was totally off-guard the second she trusted someone and had a big soft spot for the team liability, and Mami had a plan of how to deal with her own friends using deadly force.
It also goes to show that even though Homura wanted to be the hero, it was always Madoka who was the real protector. She pulled herself together after so many traumatic things happening quickly enough to save Homura yet again.

what makes this scene even sadder for me is knowing that kyoko and mami worked as a team before the events of the show, as revealed by the different story. some may interpret mami killing kyoko first as simply taking out the strongest puella magi first before they would attack her, but i see it as mami putting kyoko out of her misery by killing her. because she doesn’t want the person who’d made her happy and kept her company for so long having to suffer anymore.

Homura has worked hard to keep her friends alive to fight Walpurgisnaght, and save her Madoka, but no matter how many times she tries, Mami's and Kyoko's fate is death, Sayaka's fate is becoming a witch, Madoka's either death or powerful witch, and Homura, failure.

Mami didn't go crazy here. She is the de facto leader and cares for every girl in their group. She cries, knows that is against human morality but prefers to mercy kill everyone against their will than having to see them experience a fate worse than death. It feels like an act of pure desperation to protect everyone, not craziness. If she did it, she would most likely snap completely and turn into a witch on the spot.
But holy, Madoka is almost broken after all of this...Poor girl.

Mami was thinking ahead, but not far enough. If magical girls become witches, then Homura's explanation which Sayaka didn't believe at the start of this timeline is finally proven. So in that case, why would you want to shoot your only hope to save the world: Homura? In this scene Mami was more so motivated by insanity than reason, which is understandable. Madoka is a stronger minded person than all of the other girls but not enough people realize this in my opinion.

Madoka's reaction here is truly surprising.

Most would think of her as a crybaby, but in this scene, you can see she is ready to take action if necessary. She doesn't just shoot Mami without any emotion; she kneels firmly upright and slowly lowers her bow, ready to take another shot if necessary. Only when Mami transforms back does Madoka let her guard down and let's her kind nature take over, breaking down and crying again.
